Yup, guess he will retire now.

The Sheriff is right on this one, Ohtani and his agent both said leaked information will impact his decision.

Well, if we don't land Ohtani - and we wind up the runner-up - we do let the baseball world know that we have a massive payroll and can sign anyone.

So the Jays are out since someone leaked this then?

“Now it feels a little bit like the show The Bachelor, waiting to see if we get picked,” the source said of the Jays’ involvement in what has become the hottest story in sports and the anticipation of waiting for an answer.

The source said that during the courtship, Ohtani has expressed his affinity for Toronto and in particular has enjoyed a city that is generally calmer and quieter than many bigger U.S. urban areas, including Los Angeles.

I do think if we get him it probably closes the door on Vlad and Bo extensions although I don't know if those doors are already pretty much closed. I'd be pumped to get the unicorn regardless.

I think there might be a little bit of a difference between Rob Longley's anonymous source offering an obvious and vague quote in a Toronto Sun article and Dave Roberts blurting out to the whole world that they did meet with him, when they met with him, how long they met with him, how the meeting went and then opining on Ohtani's ultimate decision.

For the latter, the Dodgers GM had to rush out of his hotel room and do damage control. I doubt Ross needs to even address the Toronto Sun article.

Ohtani is not used to the spot light. He took the angels knowing they suck and weren’t the main LA team. I think it comes down to best offer and pretty much everything else is equal. Him being a Japanese boy means he doesn’t have the American raised bias of hating Canada.

I wonder if we'd be after Musgrove. Especially if Manoah is going the other way. 4/80 left on his deal.

He's local to SD though, and probably wouldn't be thrilled with a trade.

Its hilarious people thinking Dave Roberts saying we spoke to him is going to be a deciding factor. Ohtani isn't making a life altering decision about his future based on a manager talking to reporters.

I agree with the general sentiment, however if its down to Jays vs Dodgers and he was still very split on his decision…. It could be a tipping point.

Maybe he doesn’t want to play for a manager that can’t keep a simple secret like that? Imagine what else Roberts could leak about Ohtani’s recovery, injuries, personal issues, etc.

Lol what a garbage take. Buster upset that the poor MLB insiders are getting left out in the cold.

Multiple high profile reporters have been whining about this

The fact that the source suggested the team is willing to go well north of $500 million US (and yes, headed towards a billion Canadian) puts them squarely in the mix monetarily. The rest is up to the specifics of what Ohtani wants beyond becoming an extremely rich athlete.

Well the above quote seems to suggest the source was pretty well connected in Ohtani's pursuit. I mean you could say its a lot more specifics than Roberts saying the obvious "yeah we met with him", which everyone knew anyways.

To think Ohtani is going to base his decision on either of these is ridiculous. If he wants to go to the Dodgers, hes going to go to the Dodgers, if he wants to go to the Jays he's going to go to the Jays...

Watching fans squirm about the mention of their favorite team meeting Ohtani is hilarious.

You mean the same FO that just this past season would leak stuff about Manoah? And to the point now where some people think the relationship is beyond repair..

People don't always understand why they make the decisions they make. If he's on the fence about where to go, a personal annoyance or perceived act of disrespect could absolutely nudge him one way or the other.

If the Dodgers thought that Robert's comment was the difference of them signing Ohtani or not they would fire him on the spot and hire someone else and say "well now he's gone so there you go"

Ha, that would eliminate any chance Ohtani signs with the Dodgers

But they probably don't actually know to what extent his comments do or don't bother Ohtani. Ohtani might not even know. All I'm saying is that decisions are messy, and a seemingly innocuous comment, or just the way the way someone looks or dresses can tilt a decision one way or another.

If Ohtani asked that things be kept quiet, I don't think its outrageous to suggest that Roberts' candid response might have left a bad taste in his mouth. That could matter if he's torn on what offer to accept. Or it might be a complete nonfactor.

I also don't really buy the sentiment that since Toronto is in Canada and a hockey town that Ohtani would be able to live more freely compared to an American market. In fact I think it would be the opposite. LA has so many more famous people than Ohtani while if he goes anywhere in Toronto he's getting recognized. When Kawhi went down to Niagra Falls he basically got mobbed by people wanting to take pictures. Not to mention you'd have the Canadian media, the US media and the Japenese media all following him here.

Biggest advantage the Blue Jays have are the new facilitates in Toronto and Dunedin so I would think that would make up a large part of their sales pitch.

Nobody from the front office has outright said anything bad about Manoah. “Leaks” aren’t the same as someone directly saying something to the media.

There’s a difference

Free agency is so stupid. So much unnecessary hurt feelings of fans. If ohtani goes to the dodgers i wouldn’t be surprised to see him take a few up and inside when the jays play them. Maybe one in back depending who our pitcher is.
