wamco Verified Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 So what’s the number we are thinking there is to spend this off-season ? Without agreeing to somewhat of a number, It makes the off season thread of who to sign/trade etc kind of a waste of time After arbitration, I thought we have about 22m to spend in the off-season to get to this years payroll figure. Do we expect it to approach the 40m to spend which puts us just under the 2nd cap (check my numbers please). If so, I’d think about 32m to spend with 8 saved for deadline AS OF NOW Before cuts like Richards/Cimber/espinal etc as possibilities. Tell me how to feel

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Man the FA class is gross. I checked the list and yes, Whit Merrifield coming off 1.5 fWAR is actually the best 2B on the market. Unless you love Donovan Solano or think Amed Rosario will bounce back. By 2023 WAR the best shortstop on the market is Elvis Andrus. And then of course the top 3B are Chapman and Candelario. 3B is stacked compared to the MIF! Belt and Carlos Santana are probably the top 1B. The top OF are all fringe-average guys like KK, Soler, Pham, Duvall, Gurriel. The only truly marquee free agents are Ohtani and a few SP. And I guess some closers. Like, some of these top FA bats are just guys who will sign in January on one year deals... Yeah seriously. It's hard to see how the Jays can use free agency and significantly improve on the position player side unless they blow their wad for Ohtani or Bellinger. Looking at the "dead cat bounce back" category, the only names that stand out to me are Tim Anderson, Michael Brantley, and Rhys Hoskins. Anderson stunk and Brantley/Hoskins were hurt in 2023 so maybe you can buy low and get surplus value there. Otherwise it does look like the Jays best options to fill position player spots will be internally or trade. Unless Atkins feels really secure with his job security then I don't think he goes too internal (maybe Schneider gets one spot and the rest filled externally), but who knows. I don't think anyone of us had Belt on our radars before Atkins signed him and it worked out so maybe something pops up. Thankfully the one thing Atkins does really well is big league transactions.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 I think we have 40m or so after arb raises for FA this winter though I’ve seen rumblings as high as 50. I think the Jays are going to make a play for the Korean OF who’s coming over
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 I think 40M to spend is a fair estimate

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Might as well sign some Asians because the current crop of FA’s suck ass

I do think they will kind of do the same thing this offseason that they did for KK and Belt. Just wait it out and see who is left and willing to take a tolerable 1 year deal. I would like them to get Hoskins on a pillow deal though. He could be a difference maker. A "big bat" like Christian Walker.

Laika Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Hey, I thought we had Rhys Hoskins in one babe Schneider. Two would be even better!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Two would be even better! Haha... I'm in.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Hoskins, Brantley, Green and Ryu, Git R Done... Ross!
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 I feel like Joc Pederson might as well just sign with Toronto for $8M and get it over with. Why wait all offseason to do it? It's prophecy.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Who signs Yamamoto, I'll roll with the Yankees?
wamco Verified Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 I saw joc rumored at 1/13. What do LGJ and teo get? My not final solution if only signing FA would be to trade vlad: -sign bellinger , jd martinez, joc pederson and longoria which I think could be 36m (25 AAV for bellinger). Saves 10m for deadline if you cut Cimber and espinal.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 4, 2023 Author Posted November 4, 2023 Who signs Yamamoto, I'll roll with the Yankees? Yeah, good guess I saythem as well, the Yankees were salivating all over him, but we know he will do well whoever wins the bid.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 I'm on board with Bauer as a Jay
Marew Verified Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Bauer Is entertaining posts from almost everyone who is replying from all teams. He said he would sign with the dodgers. 1 team he would play for. Guessing Yankees or astros
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 4, 2023 Author Posted November 4, 2023 I'm on board with Bauer as a Jay Mookie Betts is in his corner, he thinks a team should sign him
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 I can’t f***ing wait to see Bauer’s revenge tour 2024
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Justin Turner declined his option with the Redsox. He could be a decent target
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 I can’t f***ing wait to see Bauer’s revenge tour 2024 I'm on his side after the BS he went through. We're already stacked at SP so unless he comes cheap, I think the FO will elect to spend elsewhere. Also think they're too soft to sign him anyways lol.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Offseason wishlist RF Springer SS Bo DH/LF - Left handed bat through trade 1B Vlad LF/DH Teo CF Varsho - have to hope for a bounce back year 3B Chapman - Only if it's reasonable C Kirk/Jansen 2B Biggio/Schneider platoon SP - lose Ryu sucks but hope Manaoh takes that spot BP - losing Hicks will suck since I can't see us paying him. Will hope Green is back and becomes our closer with Romano the setup guy.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 I'm on board with Bauer as a Jay Yeah, me too. A year ago I would have been a no. Unfortunately Shatkins will be a no. I'd bring back Roberto Osuna too...lol.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 4, 2023 Author Posted November 4, 2023 (edited) Yamamoto may have pitched his last game in Japan, and not too shabby. Yoshinobu Yamamoto Game 6 JAPAN SERIES Statline : 9 IP / 9 H / 1 R / 0 BB / 14 K (Japan Series Record) / 138 P For a guy that just turned 25, he is gonna get paid. Edited November 4, 2023 by Ehjays

My guess all along has been Houston and I still think that makes the most sense
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Imagine if nobody else wants to pay him and he ends up going to Baltimore for like 1/4.
