Bautista LOE

Babe Schneider call up

This one had all the drama though. Must win, at home, there was some doubt because of his pitch count and because of the guy at the plate. Strikes out Judge to walk off to an ovation. Pretty close to picture perfect.

Babe was a moment too. Bautista was nice but anticipated so no drama.

Great win tonight! Helps wash the taste of the last 2 games out of your mouth.

Really doesn't feel like the team is 7-3 in the last 10 games. I had to double check!

Yeah. Those back to back losses felt like losses somehow.

Bassitt's first start of the season was horrendous (9 ER, 4 HR) but he's had a really good season after that.

200 IP with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP? Pretty damn solid. This guy has been a workhorse.

Great win today!

Bassitt with 200 IP, Gausman 185 (maybe more depending on need), Berrios 1 out shy of 190 and Kikuchi probably falls just short of 170.

Doubt anyone had that on their Jays bingo card for 2023.

The Blue Jays got extremely lucky with their starting pitching this year both with injury and effectiveness, notwithstanding the regression by Manoah. Considering the front office left us with zero safety net, they should thank they're lucky stars it didn't blow up in their face.

Actually, that was probably fairly predictable. Kikuchi getting to 160+ after an abysmal season last year is probably the most surprising

Acquire veterans with clean mechanics and pristine health records and this can happen!

Will give Atkins the credit he deserves for putting this rotation together, but I do agree with your statement as well to an extent. Jays were extremely lucky with their rotation staying healthy all season. If they lose one of Gausman, Bassitt, Berrios, or Kikuchi for an extended period of time, could have been trouble. There was really no safety net considering this team struggled for a bit to replace Manoah until Ryu was healthy again.

Yeah of course, that makes things easier. But still given the injuries we see with arms, no matter the track record, you think there is no factor of luck in the equation at all for the rotation staying healthy all season?

For someone who uses the term "luck" on here a lot.

I give him some credit too. For this year its worked out well, and its a good thing because its a mo' money $93M/year entirely off the FA shelf rotation.

Getting Ryu and Green back worked out well, as it was never a sure bet. Green could have been another Kirby Yates. Losing Manoah did not.

We got very lucky on rotation health. No Robbie Ray or McClahanan situations.

Some of it's luck for sure, and some of it could be attributed to not pushing the starters well past the 100 pitch mark every time out. I think it's smart to pull the starters a little earlier from time to time instead of having them empty the tank every time out as injuries become far more likely as fatigue accumulates over the course of a season.

How many times were Ray and McClanahan pushed over 100 pitches this year? There are so many variables, including luck. Ray was pretty arm healthy, until he wasn't. He had the handle as durable in his tight pants too.

Is there a way to quantify how much our improved defense played a role in the success of our pitching staff? Maybe on an overall basis? Just curious

Yeah, as Bassitt pointed out in the post game presser, it is the stuff that happens between the starts that made the difference. He gave full props to the training staff.
