I'm not even mad at Romano. The move was going to the lefty there or walking Lowe. For a team that's apparently very analytical we make a lot of dumb f***ing anti analytical decisions.

 

I don't get why they even had Mayza up if they had no plans to use him against Lowe. Romano was far from at his best, you have a left handed hitter who really struggles against lefties, and Mayza absolutely owns left handed hitters.

Mayza was probably up in case the nail thing didn't allow Romano to pitch. But you're right, Romano is worse vs lefties, Lowe struggles vs lefties, it made too much sense, but you're forgetting the rule: Romano's the closer.

The rules of God strictly prohibit taking the closer out for the purposes of competent managing.

 

How I wish the role of closer never existed, and managers would just manage the 9th the way they manage every other f***ing inning. But no, because the guy in the ninth inning has a title suddenly all managers are strictly beholden to the rule. They're willing to do things like take Snell out of a game and throw away the world series, but analytics go out the window when you have a title: closer.

 

It's the one situation in which managers no longer manage.

2021 was definitely the best window IMO. It's unfortunate they never were able to take advantage of that opportunity. A lot of blame could be placed on Atkins and the FO for not addressing the issues in the pen earlier.

 

What was so special about 2021? What did that team have that this one doesn't? And why would that team be a good bet to good in the playoffs?

 

Don't get me wrong. That team was playing really well, but that group of players isn't too different than 2022, or even 2023. Advance scouting was probably s*** in 2021, so in the face of playoff games with much better advance scouting why would that team be a bet to do anything?

 

The team had a great run differential. But was it a great team? It was just the same team that happened to have a bunch of blow outs.

Difference between 2021/2023 isn't the "talent", it is that the talent from 2021 never developed any further and in some cases fell apart. Vlad/Bo/Kirk/Jansen/Manoah/Biggio/Espinal either went to hell, or stayed the same.

Ratio of leader in saves to second in saves on team is like 24-10 for most of the good teams, and is 36-4 for Toronto. There are exceptions, like lights out guys like Devin Williams and Bautista.

 

Can't imagine any of the good organizations making Jordan Romano a 35 save guy. The good organizations make these guys into 25 save guys, just to establish they can pull them when needed.

Im still gob smacked about it. Romano was clearly fighting it from the first at bat vs Yandy falling behind 3-0. It reminds of the start JS left Bassitt in into the 6th vs TEX on 9/11. The Hound was grinding all game. He was just lucky to be in it at all thanks to some stellar D. It was a rare and obvious 5 and dive start. But nope. Left him in and we lost 10-4. Yet he will pull Kooch at random times when he has been shoving. Read the room JS. Mayza was the call there win or lose.

This would have been a huge win but they still control their rate. Need John S to get his head out of his ass , thrown away numerous wins due to brain dead managing. It was clear Romano was affected and did not have it why leave him in? It defies logic

100% JS and Walker on that. I don’t think the FO has as much “in game” input as a lot of people think. Not like they wear headphones like NFL coaches lol. I think the FO has a lot of input and feedback before and after games.
