This got me thinking how different this competitive window would have looked had the Jays succeeded in trading for Lindor. This was 2021, so chances are trading for Lindor would have meant no Semien, and Bichette likely never plays SS again for this team from 2021-present. Of course it would help to know what the trade actually looked like in terms of which players the Jays were losing.

Would we have still signed Springer if we landed (and extended) Lindor? I mean who knows...

I refuse to read to read the news this offseason

Dec 1 - Soto visits Dunnedin (maybe?)

Dec 3 - Soto hires Toronto Realtor (rumor)

Dec 5 - Soto close to decision 90% chance it is Toronto

Dec 5 - Toronto Offer at Ohtani level

Dec 6 - (Rumor) Press conference at Rogers Center

Dec 6 - noon Soto signs 12 year 680 million with Toronto (confirmed Peter Gammons)

Dec 6 - confirmed ESPN, Rogers Sportsnet, TSN, Toronto Star and Time magazine.

Dec 6 - confirmed by Soto's agent and Soto

Dec 6 - BJMB... maybe it's real? Not yet confirmed by Blue Jays?

Dec 6 - confirmed by Blue Jays (but not official press release, just Tweet from Wilner "It is as official as it can be, talked to the one person who would know"

Dec 6 - OK. Press conference now? No press conference? Maybe it is too late

Dec 7 wake up - Soto signs 12 year 695 with Houston Astros

All very plausible other than "confirmed by Soto"

that one needs to be more ambiguous. maybe he changes his profile picture on instagram to a blue square amidst all the hype (then signs w the Cubs)

The Blue Jays are getting used again! lol

Are you saying the Blue Jays can’t sign him?

You know they signed Hyun-Jim Ryu and George Springer right?

Smart. I'd take a cheap backup that fell into our laps some time in February. But even then, the 3-5 mil spent on a decent backup could just be used to sign a decent middle reliever and we need a half dozen of those.

And it's a small sample size, but there is evidence that Heineman is good defensively.

Yeah Kirk is good and deserves to be a starting C at this point

Maybe this is the winter he loses 30 lbs lol

Hyun-Jim Ryu - $80M

Kevin Gausman - $110M

George Springer - $150M

It is time for a $190M contract!

Willy Adames, come on down

If we sign Adames I really hope Bichette is moved to 2nd. Idgaf if its his FA year

We'd need one of them to play 3rd. We have a lot of options at 2nd.

I always thought Tyler H was a really good 3rd catcher

Which makes him a below average but not the worst second catcher kind of

I would rather use that money elsewhere too I think

It's a scary thought how bad the Blue Jays catching situation would be if Kirk were to suffer an injury and miss significant time.

Is Yasmani Grandal going to fix that problem?

Probably a deadline trade patchup if that happens. Most teams don’t have catchers that can actually hit anyways, as long as the backup has good D its not the end of the world.

Just a few years ago people were saying how good our catching depth was...brutal asset management imo.

What would you have done differently? Extend Jansen? Trade Jansen for MUCH less and have no current CFer?

We've had good catching depth for the past 10 years (since signing Martin). Depth at different positions is going to go in cycles and we do have Kirk for another couple of years.
