"Perhaps they could DFA Zulu or something instead of Espinal" doesn't sound like "I doubt Zulu gets DFA'd" to me.

I do agree with the bolded though, I just think Espinal has even less use on the 40-man than Zulu.

So when I used the word "perhaps" it was a queue to alert any potential reader that I might just in fact be spitballing there.

If you want to take it literal and attack me for it (even when you go on to agree with the sentiment!) feel free but it makes you look really nitpicky Dean.

When I said I doubt that Zulu gets DFA'd I was referring to some of my posts like this one right here: https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/11179-General-Blue-Jays-Discussion-Thread-(2024)?p=1778076#post1778076

I expect a full apology and if you have any class at all Dean you will make it sincere. Perhaps you should even send me a gift card to a classy establishment like Swiss Chalet or something.

First of all Sherm, you are even more thin skinned than I thought if you actually see this as an attack.

Second of all, "Pop and Danner only have 1 option left, I guess one of them? Unless the org thinks Zulu or Little aren't worth keeping" still displays a significant lack of doubt to me, so you're getting zero apologies.

Schneider said he views Pearson, Pop and Little as non-bulk next men up in the pen. Those 3 don't sound like DFA candidates based on that.

The third "non-bulk next man up" in AAA is always a DFA candidate because they are fungible

John Schneider probably has a nice thing to say about every player in the organization!

I think it's situational too. Like let's say 2 righties like Romano and Swanson couldn't start the season, you see Pearson and Pop up at the same time.

But if someone like Mayza or Cabrera gets hurt apparently the org really likes Little as next man up there.

Also is there ever too much pitching depth? And if so, when do you know you have too much?

Yeah I'm sure guys like Zulu and Macko are also on the immediate call up radar.

LOL - this apology business is killing me. Dean, I believe Swiss Chalet can mend any fence.

There is a bull-case for everyone on the 40 man roster. There is also a bear-case.

Zulu and Macko are there because they have longer term upside, and had to be added.

Every player on the 40 man roster is either a longer term play who had to be added or someone who is on the immediate call up radar. There is literally nobody on the 40 man roster who is not one of those two things.

If Toronto had one LHRP then Little would be more important, but they do have two. They also have some non-40 man LHRP behind him.

The players to get jettisoned will certainly come from the group of Espinal, Zulueta, Pop, or Little.

I feel like Pearson and Danner just have too much upside and are a bit too close to being good to let walk.

Zulueta or Pop traded for cash considerations, maybe that happens. I dunno. Zulu for international signing money? He probably has no trade value I guess.

Zulu and Pop... the sinker is just out of style and neither of them seems to have a real handle on it.

I want to like you Dean. But then you post insufferable s*** like this.

No one said Zulu and Macko are on the immediate call up radar. They weren't even mentioned in the post you replied to. But you use them as a complete non sequitur so you can take a cheap shot all because you're a giant *******.

It's going to be annoying if Holliday is one of those Captain America try hards that makes everyone else try harder.

Ugh then they'd have two of them

Limit should be one per team

The Jays have zero. Our two best players are stoners (Bo and Goose). And our franchise hitter is Captain TOOTBLAN.

Yeah

I preferred it when they had talented but lackadaisical players like Machado

But that doesn’t really make sense though. If you’re optioning Espinal, you’re doing it because nobody wanted to trade for him. You don’t actually want to pay him 2.75M to play in AAA. So you DFA him. That serves an immediate purpose (clearing a spot for Serven). And there are two possible outcomes:

1) he gets claimed - great, his salary is gone

2) he doesn’t get claimed and reports to AAA and gets re-added to the 40-man again if the team needs him

I can’t think of a single reason why the team would just option him

Incorrect assumption on the DFA. If a player gets DFA, the Jays still have 7 days to work out a trade with any interested teams, of there’s no takers he can then be placed on either outright waivers or unconditional waivers.

Bit of a snag with Espinal though, if he made it through outright waivers, he could refuse to go to AAA since he has more than 3 years of service time.

Also, it’s rare-ish for a player to be claimed on release waivers since teams can just wait for him to clear, become a free agent, then sign him for the pro-rated minimum while the releasing team pays the bulk of his salary.

Varsho is captain America material

I believe this is correct.

However, players with more than five years of Major League service time can reject an assignment to the Minor Leagues, and players with more than three years of Major League service time, or who have been previously outrighted, may reject the outright assignment in favor of free agency in lieu of the assignment.

He would forfeit his guaranteed salary though. I believe with 3 years of service time he can refuse an outright assignment and become a FA but he forfeits the money. Which would be a win for Toronto, and surprising to see Espinal do.

His attacks have been relentless, even if none of them have actually landed. I can't see any other way in which he can make this right other than through a Swiss Chalet gift card.

If he has any class at all he'll do it but I'm not getting my hopes up.
