Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Author Posted August 24, 2023 (edited) He's just come far more manageable as a player... insane news. Edited August 24, 2023 by Spanky99
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 The Angels continue to ruin everything. Damn that’s a terrible break for Ohtani, likely cost himself like 200 million or so. Wonder what happens with him now… I guess he could probably play as a DH next year or maybe an OF??

FFS that's awful! As a baseball fan, this sucks big time!

Wonder what happens with him now… I guess he could probably play as a DH next year or maybe an OF?? I still think he'll become the highest paid player in baseball, even if he can't pitch for a year or two. But yeah definitely did cost himself possibly 200 million or so if he can never pitch again.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I keep thinking they could have traded him, avoided this, and stocked their team for years. What a poor decision. This sucks for Ohtani. I was excited to see what he would make this off-season. I was thinking $60M AAV.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Will be an interesting situation if he requires surgery and is still unsigned at that particular time and on top of that be out of the league for another year.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Honestly now that I think of it, this could make it more likely he stays with the Angels. If Moreno is the only team that gives him what he would’ve gotten before the injury…. I could see it Dodgers will be hesitant. Mets could match the offer but IDK if he wants to go there. Yanks could give him a huge offer too after this terrible year… but again the location not sure. Will be interesting to see what happens next year

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 He should still clear 400M. Judge got 360M, and Ohtani is the same caliber of hitter, and should still throw at least some innings over the deal. People point to Judge's OF defense, but IMO there's no reason to think Ohtani can't be a good RF if he's not pitching.

Judge's contract is the benchmark IMO and he should easily surpass that given his age and potential. Ohtani even just as a bat will still get a $45-50M base salary over 10 years that probably will include performance bonuses on the pitching side. He's still going to make huge money this offseason and IMO will be the highest paid player in baseball despite the injury news.
Nursehoneybadger Verified Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Mookie and Mike Trout were saying on his podcast a few weeks ago Ohtani could do both for maybe 5 years but it was pretty clear there was issues going back to after the all star break when he kept getting pulled from his starts early.

I wonder if he could have avoided some of the UCL damage if he shut down the pitching side a couple months ago when he started getting "fatigued" and leaving starts early.

Will be interesting to see what happens next year He probably should get away from the Angels organization haha. He's still going to get paid a huge contract whether from the Dodgers or Yankees. He's going to surpass Aaron Judge's contract easily IMO just as a bat, and the rest of the contract will be creative in terms of pitching bonuses and possibly an Opt-Out after year two or three.

Maybe moving forward with him, once he starts pitching again, only start using him as a pitcher in the second half, so you have him at 100% down the stretch and for the Postseason. Kind of like what the Astros did with Roger Clemens in 2006. So Ohtani only makes 15-20 regular season starts. If he signs with a team like the Dodgers, they could easily accommodate that.

Well they were saying it was blisters and then there was also "cramping", so who knows what the truth was. He had a couple 5s and one 4 inning game but also the complete game a month ago so who knows. Against the jays he also had to miss his at bat in the bottom of the 9th with bases loaded.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 If I was an owner and signed him to a ten year deal I wouldn’t let him pitch. Would rather protect my asset to play as many games as possible.
Nursehoneybadger Verified Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 I guess he could be a good Long reliever. It has to be a 6 man rotation if hes pitching as a starter anyway

Would rather protect my asset to play as many games as possible. I would introduce a "load management" strategy when it comes to him pitching. Would start building his arm up in mid-to-late June so you can have him at full strength in the second half and for the Postseason. Limit him to 15-20 starts each season.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 These things they happen. It sucks for baseball. I personally don't care about how much he makes, I have no stake in that and he's already made more than enough money to live comfortably for generations of his family so let's not overdo it and act like there's some sort of tragedy developing here. Definitely sucks for baseball though, I do feel bad for him from an individual talent perspective, great player and great ambassador of the game.

I'm more bummed as a baseball fan more than anything else. Not sad or upset that he's losing out on more money. The man and his family are set up for life. He probably doesn't even need to step onto an MLB field again, and he'll bring in millions from sponsors. He's still going to get paid this offseason regardless and likely will be the highest paid player in baseball.
Nursehoneybadger Verified Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Judges contract seems like it will be a vary bad one. Probably 2-3 good years then hes basically Stanton and the yankees know that. Shows how much money these teams have to waste.

Its all monopoly money for him at this point. Whats a couple hundred million matter +/-. Its more about him personally as a human/athlete, and the loss potential to the game baseball of a diminished unicorn. Someone and something never seen before. Also, the Angels absolutely suck as an organization so badly its mind boggling.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 The Angles are a joke. They could have made bank him this year but refused to so they can "make the playoffs". He should become a late inning RP to save his arm. His bat is too good to be getting TJS.

Would rather protect my asset to play as many games as possible. Him being a pitcher as well is what's driving all the hype though. Ohtani is hugely marketable and if you stop allowing him to pitch there goes the whole novelty of what he provides. He just becomes another run of the mill HOF hitter instead of a GOAT baseball talent that gives you tons of national and international coverage. No baseball player in a very long time has commanded this kind of mythical allure.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Yeah with Ohtani being a two-way player for the next decade at an elite level, we're talking about him being one of the best athletes of all time across all sports. This news really sucks as a fan. If he just hits for the rest of his career, he'll still put up amazing numbers but yeah definitely he loses that allure. He just becomes a regular player.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 There's no way Ohtani is going to agree to stop pitching. Not yet anyway.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 There's no way Ohtani is going to agree to stop pitching. Not yet anyway. Yeah agreed. His legacy is on the line and he wants to be known as one of the best, if not best players to have played the game. Heck even be known as one of the best athletes ever.

Whenever it's determined that he's healthy enough to pitch again, I would consider make him a second half/playoff pitcher. Hit exclusively in the first half as a DH, and multipurpose after the all-star break or maybe a bit sooner. Otherwise you can start him for all your home games and playoff games. That would give his arm sufficient rest throughout the season. I don't like the idea of making him a bullpen arm and don't even think making him a bullpen arm necessarily is healthier for him.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
