Braves acquire Pierce Johnson for 2 minor leaguers. Could have been a good arm to close out games when Romano isn't available

Braves farm isn't even that great but AA still got it done

Is this the Pierce Johnson in question?

If so this guy is having a pretty lousy season and is far from a guy I'd want thrust into a closing spot.

Yes. He has alot of closing experience and keep in mind he pitched in Colorado as the primary closer, he'd be a good addition to any team looking to augment the back-end of the pen - ie. exactly what we need here.

Nothing interesting happening yet… still waiting.

Normally by this time there’s at least 1 or 2 cool trades that have happened no?

Seems very slow and late compared to last year

Looks like AA has been the busiest GM so far . Has acquired Taylor Hearn, Pierce Johnson, Yonny Chirinos.

Are any of these acquisitions that meaningful?

I know you're trolling and doing a s***** job of it, but Pierce Johnson is 32 and now has like 1/2 a season of closing experience. He's also walking almost 6 batter per 9. Back to your cave.

Closer? I'd take Mayza/Swanson/Richards and Green over PJ... he's been getting wrecked, we just picked up the LHP version of Johnson in Cabrera.

It started about 7 days prior to the deadline and the prices will be exorbitant as last year, sellers market every year now with the extra WC spots.

I know. The Braves have no clue.

So you like Pierce Johnson because the Braves picked him up? The Jays literally just picked up the same type of arm from the left hand side, I don't get it. Hmm... he does have good Stuff+ numbers, but the fastball seems to be his issue, players are teeing off of him and he walks far too many, not to mention that ghastly HR/FB rate. <-- Which could certainly have something to do with Coors Field, IDK.

No no, the Braves have a clue and that's why they won't be using Johnson as their secondary closer. This looks like a solid depth move - nothing more.

According to the Sheriff, Belly sucks! Looks like he's the top trade candidate in terms of bats at this deadline.

Bellinger has been a rock star.

This is caveman-like thinking similar to when Gord Ash kept Joe Carter around 5 years too long because he was getting 100 RBI a season.

The analytics have never been more accessible than they are now. You guys seem smart (enough), you both should learn how to read a Statcast page! They even color code it for the double digit IQ fans such as yourselves!

I'll go ahead and get you started with a quick lesson. Blue = Bad and Red = Good.

Rockies did a good job on this one. The fact that they are actually selling instead of hanging on to everyone is a big improvement alone. But they got the Braves #10 and 26th ranked prospects for a pretty mediocre reliever.

Braves obviously see something in the profile, but he's not exactly cheap and he's 32.

He has good stuff, but he's getting lit up like a Christmas tree both at Coors and on the road and doesn't know where his pitches are going... you see it in his statcast page and Eno Sarris system, the hard hit% and FG results are pukeworthy. Meh...

His fastball stuff+ is way better outside of coors just like Estevez.

I mention it in the post, Mike. He's still getting destroyed on the road as well.

I see the Reds are shopping Jonathan India, I wonder what he'd cost. He'd look good at 2B. Give Merrifield more time in LF.

And speaking of Merrifield, I wonder what the chances are his option is picked up by both sides for next year at 18M. He's comparable to Bell, Benintendi, Haniger, Pederson.

Controllable SP. So don't really have the ability, unless they wanted Manoah and the Jays wanted to go that route

Chirinos and Hearn could be solid multiple inning relievers or start when needed. Pierce Johnson is a nice add.

Nothing spectacular but solid overall baseball moves nonetheless.

It depends if the Jays think they can get Manoah back to the pitcher he was in 2021/2022. If he's only a passable 4/5 starter moving forward, I would buy low on India and the Jays have their second baseman who still has some untapped potential for the next three seasons. But doubt Reds would even take Manoah now.

I would still prefer Pederson at 18M over Merrifield. At least Pederson could hit 25-30 HRs and the Jays need a power bat for one of their corner OF spots and DH. Merrifield at 18M is way too much IMO given his age and abilities. He's having a nice season but Jays can't afford picking up that option at 18M.

Admittedly, I haven't really been paying attention to Belly much, but K% is just about the last category I would have guessed to be his greatest strength this year.

I mean, they can afford it in the strictest sense of the term "afford" but it doesnt mean they should. Chances are he gets his option denied, no qualifying offer and maybe they try to work out a multi-year deal Like, if Whit was actually the primary bench guy rather than the starter, THAT would be ideal. And not like 200-250 PA bench guy but rather the legit 10th man that spells the 2b, LF, would DH some days, pinch run a ton, late game defensive replacement where he'd end up with 400+ PAs.

Basically, he'd be Espinal and Biggio rolled into 1 player, and actually be useful instead of a s*** sandwich.

That's the thing he can hang his hat on. If he maintains that K rate to go with his defense he'll be a serviceable player again. But he's far from a "rock star".

Teo is providing negative value on the bases, at the plate, and in the field. And he's still basically doubling Vlad's fWAR (1.1 to 0.6).

Ouch.

Teoscar grades out as a positive right field defender this season by every available metric. Compare that to Vlad who is having an awful defensive season at first base and the WAR difference isn't a huge surprise.

I love busting your chops on Belly hahaha.

For my sake, I hope Belly slows down and that Sale makes 8-10 strong starts down the stretch or else I'm kicking myself making that deal.

Yeah I don't see the Jays picking up the option at all. Like you said maybe they work a multi-year deal out for 2 years or so. I prefer having Merrifield as the 10th man like you said. Can fill multiple spots in the lineup and on the field which should get him 400 PA. And yes would be better than rolling out Biggio/Espinal in that same role.

I'll take Vladdy's D at first over Teo's in RF every day of the week and twice on Sundays. It's not particularly close, the metrics are just horrible this season.
