harvey16 Verified Member Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 For all those that doubted Belt's abilities and said he was finished and washed up, what say you now? Even with his absolutely horrid start he's hitting just above his career avg with an OPS+ of 123. Since May 1st his OPS over .950.

I still think he wasn't ready enough from spring training though.

Laika Community Moderator Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 Can't recall a player ever looking as bad as Belt did for the first six weeks or so, and that player being able to turn it around
John Balkabella Verified Member Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 He seems to get to 3-2 nearly every AB. He is what I was hoping Biggio would be, a good on base guy with a little pop from time to time.

Same, didn't know a ton about him and he looked straight up ASS early in the season. He has been a welcome addition this year.

keggy Verified Member Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 To be fair in the beginning Belt had like a 50% K rate in a large sample. He looked like Chris Davis at the end of his career.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 I said at the end of April if Belt didn't start to turn things around in May, the Jays probably need to make a decision on him. Well he has turned things around given more ABs which is great! If his struggles did continue in May, he likely would be a DFA candidate. Don't know if there was anything wrong in stating that after his brutal April.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 Belt injury report imminent thanks to this thread
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 I would still like a little more production. Only 3 homeruns and 14 steaks. We need to eat!
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 Can't recall a player ever looking as bad as Belt did for the first six weeks or so, and that player being able to turn it around Belt was only really bad for his first 6 games/25 plate appearances. His offensive numbers, although BABIP aided a bit have been superb ever since.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 If he would have played from the beginning of spring training maybe his slump wouldn't have went so far into the regular season is all I have to say. The club was easing him back after offseason knee surgery so I was fine with how they eased him back into the lineup. No sense having him push too hard too soon and risking blowing out his surgically repaired knee.

He ended April in an 0-14 (including May 1) and through May 1 hit .161/.235/.274 with a 44.1% K rate May 2 to present he has hit .342/.484/.534

From April 11-24 he hit .333/.379/.556 160 WRC+ with a 27.6% K rate. So he was really bad at the start and end of the month and really good in the middle, leading to overall mediocre numbers for the month.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 Great now his knee's going to blow up.
93 Jays Verified Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 I appreciate Brandon Belt. Second that motion mang:cool:
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Brandon Belt is a bargain. Imagine how the Astros feel about giving Jose Abreu a 3 year/$58.5 million contract.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2023 Posted June 13, 2023 Yeah, I was a fan of the signing and remain so. 1/9 is a lotto ticket that was worth is for a LHH impact stick - even though he is slow as f*** and K's too much. His OBP - # of pitches he sees - and LHH extra base hit potential are handy to have.

Taro Verified Member Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Belts a beast! So sad we didn’t make it further. He did his part for the team this year. Other guys need to step up more especially at the end.
