harvey16 Verified Member Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 (edited) So just out of curiosity, I compared game times from opening day this year to last year. The average game took 3h20m on opening day in 2022, this year the average game was 2h45m. That's a difference of 35 minutes less year over year. That's massive. I for one am a big fan of the new pitch clock, but would be in favour of only using it during the regular season like we do with the ghost runner rule in extra innings. Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I think the pitch clock should be a part of every professional baseball game going forward, and I will have no problem if game 7 of the World Series ends on a violation (it wouldn't be my preference, but I would be fine with it). That said, I still f***ing hate the ghostrunner rule.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I saw a tweet last night by Codify or baseballers, something of that ilk. It was that yesterdays opening day games average duration was the lowest it's been in 43 years. 1979/80... mindblowngif

It really only solved an incredibly rare issue. The vast, vast majority of games are finished within 9 innings, and 15+ inning games are INCREDIBLY rare. Just seemed like a solution in search of a problem more than anything.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I have always thought they should at least play a few innings of additional normal baseball.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I have always thought they should at least play a few innings of additional normal baseball. Just use the NPB method and end games in a tie after 12 innings
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 Just use the NPB method and end games in a tie after 12 innings I'd be in favour of this just to watch everyone over the age of 50 have their heads explode spontaneously in outrage.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 Just use the NPB method and end games in a tie after 12 innings Or if the game is still tied after 12 innings do the ghost runner thing. I also have never liked how after 9 innings of fair Baseball across both sides. You now start extra innings with runners at second and one team could be in the middle of their lineup and the other team at the bottom of their lineup. You should get play a couple extra innings. And than bring in the runner at second but you can reset your lineup from the top.

Okay, that's essentially me. But a tie would be the same as a loss for teams that are contending. Given how few of these games occur it would be the mathematical equivalent of a loss.

I don't like a tie in baseball either, but I would be able to live with it if there was a compelling argument for it. I can't really think of one though since the current ghost runner accomplishes pretty much the only thing they'd really want to be worried about, which is those super long regular season games that end up screwing over teams for two weeks after. Allowing a tie would be like change for the sake of change with no real benefit.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I'd prefer a tie to a gimmick. At least we would get 12 innings of real baseball.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I really like the resetting the lineup idea! Never heard that before. I’m surprised its never been discussed. I think people would want to see each teams best 3 hitters in that situation. Better for everybody teams and fans. I’m not a fan of the gimmick in the first place. But if you’re going to do it. May as well make it as interesting as possible.

How about remove the extra runner But the managers can go from the top of the lineup in every inning of extra innings if they want it would almost be like a shootout just the best hitters leading off, over and over Springer Bo Vlad in the 10th Springer Bo Vlad in the 11th hahaha

In the Shootout teams can pick their shooters. Why not have something similar in Baseball.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 As an aside - the first player in MLB history to be penalized for a pitch clock violation is.............. Marcus Stroman!

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 Stroman took that penalty in stride, just saying. He was fine with the call.

harvey16 Verified Member Posted April 1, 2023 Author Posted April 1, 2023 I honeslty don't mind the ghost runner rule, especially for regular season games. I'd much rather that, then having to endure a 19 inning game only to lose because you run out of pitchers. Remember losing to the Tigers on Canada Day 2016. We had to send both Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney to pitch cause we had no one left in the pen.
