John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 Had no idea. Wow Gordie Howe was his hero, wanted to wear #9 because of it.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 Is that the actual reason though? I think it was more for the players, not the refs. Even a lineman can line up as an eligible receiver as long as the formation is legal. And they also made changes to the rule regarding jersey #'s starting in 2021. Yes it's the actual reason. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_number_(American_football)#:~:text=Certain%20numbers%20may%20only%20be,the%20officials%20in%20determining%20penalties. "Certain numbers may only be worn by players in specific positions, thus assisting the officials in determining penalties." "Players who wear numbers from 50 to 79 are, by rule, prohibited from catching or touching forward passes if their team is in possession of the ball and may not line up in a position that allows them to do so, unless explicitly indicated to the referee during a tackle-eligible play."

But they can do so now, as long as they declare themsevles eligible prior to the play starting and lineup in an eligible receiving position. At least the theory of the # rules makes some sense in football. There's literally zero reason to mandate #'s in the NHL, MLB, NBA, pro soccer other than " because reasons" To be all militant about the # on a jersey in the MLB and think it has some drastic impact on the sanctity and history of the game is probably evidence of a psychosis forming or having already formed.

It doesn't seem like it's fully registered in your dome yet but I've done all I can. Keep grinding those gears bud - you're so close to getting it!

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2023 Posted February 15, 2023 Strawman arguements don't help your case. That's more a "slippery slope" argument than a strawman...

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2023 Posted February 15, 2023 Yep it's time for a best ever debate again 1. Gordie Howe Remember, he played in the low scoring era Goals Gretzky - 894 (high scoring era) Ovechkin - 812 (high scoring era) Howe - 801 (low scoring era) MVP Gretzky - 8 Howe - 6 By comparison with peers, the debate is really between Howe and Gretzky. The difference to me is Howe scared the s*** out of everyone when he was on the ice, and dropped the gloves whenever needed, Gretzky scared no one.

If anyone outside of Canada and the state of Minnesota actually cared about hockey then Gretzky would be a top contender for greatest athlete of all time. As it stands he's merely the greatest hockey player of all time. But if I'm reading this right I think you're just trying to point out some interesting facts to show that it might be closer than people think rather than actually making the case that Howe is better.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 This was a great thread and I'm sad it's ending. Can we just restart it with a countdown to the regular season?

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Maybe we should give Pendleton the honors and he can start a new thread with a player of his own choosing. (This is my way of having someone else do the math for me.)

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 You bitches ready for some beisbol!?! Lets go! I haven't followed much of anything this year. Someone give me the good news hype please. Pearson looks like a beast and Tiedemann is gonna make opening roster riiiight??? Both will probably start in the minors. Not being cynical, just that with the # of arms the Jays have in the pen without options, unless Pearson looks like he's Edwin Diaz, he probably starts his season in Buffalo unless there's an injury or two in the pen prior to the season starting. Tiedemann has exactly 11 innings pitched as AA and 78 in his 1 pro season of the minors. He would be definitely limited on innings this season (like.. 130 maybe?) so it's probably better for him to start out in AA to have his innings managed, and if there came a point where he was just utterly dominant and the Jays had a need down the stretch in the thick of a playoff race.. then maybe you bring him up to finish up his innings while helping the club. I don't see many scenarios where he starts the season out of the rotation with the big club. *rain....parade*

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 I didn’t realize we had Jay Jackson in camp. Journey man who has missed bats in his career. Could be a sneaky pick to make the team.
