Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2023 Author Posted January 30, 2023 Shawn Green was one of my favourites. That '99 season he had was a monster. He was a favourite of mine growing up as well. Does anyone remember why the Jays moved him?

Never heard that As the article says there was a confluence of issues - (1) the Jays were in the process of being sold off by Labatt's, meaning the budget and the room for Gord Ash to negotiate was in flux, (2) Green was a young superstar and very expensive, (3) Green expressed a desire to play on the west coast where he is from. Basically, Ash's hands were tied. Green would have signed if the Jays offered what he ended up getting from LAD.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 Shawn Green was my favourite player when I was a kid. Definitely that 1998 season with Clemens, Green, Delgado, Canseco got me into baseball.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 Who is the other person in the picture? If I'm correct, he was around for a while and really is as short as it seems in the picture.

My guess is Joe Inglett, as the caption from the pic where i found it says its Marco Scutaro... but that doesnt look anything like Scutaro.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 the other guy like that from that era that comes to mind is Mike McCoy but not sure he overlapped with Rios
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 the other guy like that from that era that comes to mind is Mike McCoy but not sure he overlapped with Rios McCoy was my first thought too, but yeah wasn't there the year this was taken, it was 2008.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 It's Joe Inglett. He actually put together a nice half season for the Jays in 2008 I remember.

Definitely that 1998 season with Clemens, Green, Delgado, Canseco got me into baseball. I was legit pissed when they traded Green. Right after his only all star season, he and Delgado has just cemented themselves in the middle of the lineup.... but of course at that point i was never really following anything other than the on field stuff, so had no idea about the sale of the team and the ******** that was about to happen.

Joe Inglett served me lunch at the post spring training meet and greet with the Jays players. He was very nice. This is the same event that Rios was a massive **** to large groups of children.

The Green and Halladay trades and Delgado leaving left me pretty sour. The Interbrew and early years of Rogers ownership sucked as a Jays fan.

Yeah I don't get that emotional about players being traded or leaving via FA, though those three leaving for sure hurt as a Jays fan. Especially since I was younger when Green and Delgado left. I think if the Jays got a good return on Halladay, wouldn't have felt that sour but yeah.

I dont get emotional about it anymore at all, but those were the younger days when emotion ran high before logic and intellect asserted itself.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 I thought Reed Johnson at first, but I think it's Inglett. The disrespect to Reed Johnson's iconic goatee. But yeah that's Joe Inglett.

Yeah I never looked at baseball through a business lens as I did later on. In 1998, was a young fan and probably was like that until 2008. Heck even when Frank Catalanotto wasn't brought back after 2006, was kind of sad.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2023 Posted January 30, 2023 Reed Johnson should never be confused. Joe Inglett had a pretty decent utility season for us. He would never strike out and had great at-bats. He hit lead off a little bit that season as well. I want to say 2008? Maybe 2009.
