Report: Shohei Ohtani Meeting With Blue Jays in Toronto This Weekend

It's not a headline any Toronto Blue Jays fans thought they'd be reading, but a source close to the team tells Baseball Rumors that superstar free agent Shohei Ohtani is in The Six this weekend to meet with Blue Jays brass.

And helping matters out, apparently, is current Jays pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, the Japanese lefthander who's coming off a strong season in Toronto. Kikuchi faced off against Ohtani a number of times between 2013 and 2017, when both were top pitchers in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan.

Ohtani became a free agent this winter after five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, and is looking for a new home. He underwent elbow surgery recently and won't be able to pitch in 2024, though hopes to resume doing so in 2025 and beyond.

But he will be able to swing the bat as a DH next season, and the Jays are certainly looking for an offensive boost after a mediocre season for the team at the plate. Ohtani had his best major league season with the bat in 2023, blasting 44 home runs, with 95 RBIs, and a .304 average. His 1.066 OPS, .412 on-base, .654 slugging and OPS+ of 184 were all TOPS in the majors.

Although his season on the mound was cut short by the elbow problem, he's still the leading candidate to grab his second AL MVP award when the winners are announced this month.

It's expected to cost about $500M on a long-term deal to win the services of the 29-year-old two-way superstar; whether the Blue Jays are willing to meet that price, and are able to beat out more attractive bidders for his services, like the LA Dodgers, remains to be seen.

Ohtani is apparently spending the entire weekend in Toronto.

I will not let myself believe we have any chance at Ohtani. The fact he's actually coming here instead of making teams come to him is surprising too.

Ohtani probably looking for a Canadian wife, quelling the gay rumours at the same time and getting a Canadian passport. I don’t care if he’s gay or not, would be happy to have him on the team.

Say it ain’t so, Joe.

If the rumour is true I think it would mean we potentially have the payroll space to bring Ohtani on. Wonder if they’d be willing to break the bank for marketing reasons. Wonder what kind of boost it would give Sportsnet.

If the rumor is true, we may have a shot because it takes $100m off the sticker price easy

So basically you're saying that you're gay lol

I would not admit a thing like that on a masculine sports group but I mostly just like the culture. Care free, promiscuous and good fashion.

Wat? There’s a good chunk of the other team here. Testosterone is actually discouraged here.

Price should be about 500. You might get a couple years of good pitching from him. Aaron judge contract plus maybe 3 years of pitching but probably time on DL. But never 30 starts in those years. Maybe not even 200 innings the rest of his career.

What is the rumour? That he is not going to pitch anymore?

Yes, that is the rumor I alluded to. Glad you clarified, as someone may have taken it a different way.

The only source I trust is Marty York.

Hazel is pretty reliable too.

You guys know who Kevin Gray is? He was the guy that called the Darvish signing with Toronto in 2011 while he was a beat reporter for the Lugnuts, hahaha. f*** that guy!

No matter what I think chance we get him is tiny

But some proof pics of him in Toronto this weekend would be cool :)

The weekend has passed and not a whimper out of the 6ix with any type of Shohei sighting, that dude that reported it is a vlogger with a tiny following on his s***** site, that holds zero credibility, it didn't happen.
