Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Also what are we thinking about Berrios being announced for game 2? I thought for sure it would be Bassit. Guess he gets game 3 if needed

Guess he gets game 3 if needed Why bother announcing this now? Honestly if our season is on the line, I would hate to think it could end without Bassitt. He looks better than anyone right now. Obviously it would still mean Berrios would pitch with our season on the line if Bassitt saves the season in game 2, but he would get a more favourable matchup.

The former would surely be the choice against another team, but I think it's a matchup play against a lefty heavy lineup.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Tickets are down to like $15 on stubhub for tomorrow’s game lol. Anyone within driving distance?? 4:30PM weekday games so it's somewhat understandable. Plus tickets to watch teams like Minnesota etc., never really are expensive in comparison to some other MLB teams. Probably cheaper to see the Jays play on the road than play at home during the Postseason for tickets haha.

Berrios was awesome in September - 2.78 xFIP, 10.8 K/9, 1.71 BB/9 If the Twins are loaded with lefties, I do wonder how much they considered starting Kikucci, who was also great in the 2nd half (ERA was up in September, but everything else looked good). It will be interesting to see if they piggyback Kikucci and let him throw multiple innings out of the pen in one of the games.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Yeah tickets seem to be priced like any season game. Weekend game at least.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Author Posted October 3, 2023 Any worries about Berrios going up against his former team, who may know him better than most?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Any worries about Berrios going up against his former team, who may know him better than most? Berrios will be extra motivated to show the Twins that they made a mistake in trading him.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Any worries about Berrios going up against his former team, who may know him better than most? It's been a whole 2 years since he last pitched for them. In any case, you can see his career # against them, pretty much in line with career numbers with a couple of big time K/BB performances, one clunker (peak 2022 Berrios) and one wild but effective start. https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask/berrios-career-record-vs-twins https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=berrijo01&year=Career&t=p#oppon_extra
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 The start time for these games piss me off.

That's dumb.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 I may bump this later. Let’s hope not So you're going to see him over talking with some old teammate, handshakes and hugs and conclude that means he's exited to see them more than anything? That could be, you know, just a professional thing to do before he locks into his game mode and wants to crush their soles. If you find pictures of him out at restaurants/bars with a ton of Twins players after each game - then yes, but I highly doubt that happens.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Our WC 12 pitchers and 14 position players for their postseason roster. Jansen being injured basically makes it so that they have to carry Cam Eden at all times for whenever Kirk gets on base late in games. Also what's the status on Jansen's injury? Is he due back at any point in the playoffs?

Dan and Buck were musing about how Jansen could potentially make it back for the playoffs if the Jays won a few rounds but I don't recall anything more concrete than that.

Berrios was poor in the second half in general, but it depends what split you want to take. I just figured it would be Bassit because he has been so consistent, but we'll see how it goes. I think it’s clear they like Berrios better against lefties and think his stuff might play up if he's limited to 70-80 pitches.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Author Posted October 3, 2023 Berrios will be extra motivated to show the Twins that they made a mistake in trading him. Hopefully the extra motivation stays in check. Overthrowing for pitchers is a bad thing.

Berrios had a 3.89 ERA/4.09 FIP in the second half, compared to 3.65/3.99 entire season numbers so he pitched pretty much the same as the rest of the season. You raise a good point about the lefty splits as Bassitt was hit pretty hard by left handed hitters as a whole this season and absolutely torched on the road where he allowed a .427 WOBA.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 If Bassitt sucks v. lefties and the Twins are full of them - why isn't Kikucci starting?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Well, now that we know who starting game 2 there’s only 1 thing I can say about that, I hope we don’t see Bassitt at all, and I hope we don’t see Kikuchi unless it’s the right side of a blowout

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 I meant if he has a bad game, douche I'm confused. If he has a bad game, you're going to claim he must have cared more about hanging out with old teammates and that's the reason he pitched poorly? Or after he pitches a bad game, you think he's going to be more excited than anything to hangout with his teammates?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Jay Jackson accepted the outright assignment so will be available in the playoffs but only as an injury replacement

In the sports world, all kinds of narratives are built around someone’s performance. You’re assuming he’s all locked in, cold killer for this playoff game. If you’re upset about those narratives, go collect Pokémon cards

Kikuchi ran out of gas towards the end of the season. His stuff+ cratered to 94 in the last month of the season compared to his season average of 105. Hopefully the stuff plays out of the pen if he's needed in the wild card series.
