So if Vlad wins the HR derby will that be a good thing or a bad thing?

 

Good he has sorted some things out about his swing and he goes on a tear after the AS break.

 

Bad he thinks that there is not, nor has been anything wrong and his approach doesn’t change.

 

It’s a no win scenario. :(

The two are often different though.

 

Nothing worse than some no namer with a big first half getting into the All-Star game. I'd rather see a name brand player like Vlad back his way in than a guy like that.

The problem with Espinal getting in was that he still wasnt very good and didn't deserve to be there, not that he actually had a big first half. He had a big first month, then went MIA, then a big June. And big .... i mean big for him. His slash line when he was selected as a replacement was .271/.322/.394 with 6 HRs. Wow, what an amazing performance worthy of celebration as one of the stars of the season.

 

 

I would absolutely rather see a guy who legit had a great 1st half out of nowhere in the all star game over a veteran who's just getting in because of a season he had 3 years ago, and just been kind of above average since.

Yeah I deleted Espinal bc he was a bad example. He wasn't really having a break out year anyway.

 

But the game should highlight the biggest stars in baseball IMO.

 

Vlad is 10th in WAR among AL 1B lol. But I'd still put him in over Ryan Noda (5th) or Brandon Drury (3rd) or Nate Lowe (2nd). Who wants to see turds like that play? Boring.

 

Especially if Vlad being on the AS team means he'll participate in the HR derby. That is must watch TV.

Yeah I’d rather the All Star game have actual stars, even if they are having down years. MLB should want to have the stars to promote the sport and the fans should want the stars for the entertainment value. Not having Tatis in the game, for example, is absurd.

It’s not even a question of stars having down years. Tatis has played 64 games and has accumulated 3 WAR. There’s a very small handful of players that can do that in this league. Even missing 20 games hes out performed 99.8% of the league.

 

That dynamic level of player is an All-Star. Wander Franco regardless what position he is. Is an All-Star. 2 of those most exciting young players in the game are both not in the All-Star game. And they having monster seasons. Both have a chance to be 6 WAR players or better.

Tatis not getting in had to do with getting busted for roids. Very frowned upon by players and coaches these days.

 

Yup its not some mystery. Remember its a vote, not just sort WAR leaderboards and pick the top guys

I wouldn't be extending Guillermo Martinez with the way this lineup has approached things. I know he doesn't go up to hit for them, but you pretty much have majority of these bats struggling and not hitting anywhere close to their career power numbers.
