Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Are people saying that praising Baltimore is "not ok"? I don't think so. The full and fair representation of the position would be something like this: Yes, Baltimore has a nice young core breaking into the big leagues right now and an excellent looking farm. Yes, their developmental system seems to be doing very well. However, they have a long track record of being a dogshit organization so maybe we should hold off on the Orioles fellatio for juuuuuust a little bit longer because it's very much within the realm of possibility that they will f*** it up. Prospects will break your heart. A few high profile busts and some failure to spend money properly and they might end up as the same sorry Orioles we know and love in a a couple of years. I think this is spot on. It's not always such a black and white situation. It's just like when people look at the results to date and say "Atkin's doesn't know how to create proper depth on this team" - when we went into the season with Jansen, Biggio, Espinal and a 5th OFer in Lukes on the bench. We had all kinds of versatility and skill sets on the bench. Even though the results may not have been there - no matter what the situation, there's also a probability of failure that you can't control. You have to judge the reaction to the results.

This isn’t unfair but you just KNOW there’s the same message on Orioles Hangout, just with “Orioles” replaced with “Blue Jays”. After all it’s not like we did anything for 20 years.

Fair enough, but Toronto has at least been better than Baltimore Since 2000 Toronto has two 5th place finishes and two separate competitive windows (2014 to 2016 and 2020 to present). Baltimore has 8 5th place finishes and one competitive window (2012 to 2016). Toronto's version of bad is extended mediocrity. Baltimore's version of bad is hopelessness. Not quite the same.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 How about all the times BTS and Laika were salivating over the Rays success all these years? I guess it's "f***ing stupid" according to you. How are they Jays fans? You should call them out. If you're a true fan of the game of baseball, you appreciate and give recognition to other organizations/teams or players when they do some things right or well. Obviously every time the Jays play the Rays or Orioles, I want the Jays to win. Though I also enjoy watching the Rays and Orioles occasionally because of their young talent, pitching etc. I don't know if I would say Baltimore is "one of the best current stories in sports" lol, though they definitely are a good story this season in baseball along with other teams like the Marlins, D'Backs and Rangers. Well put by JB, the Rays are regularly blown for years here but now Baltimore is hitting and so praising them is not ok I've praised Baltimore this season plenty and given credit where it's due. At this point it looks like they've passed the Jays and it might stay that way for a while. Might. But calling them one of the best stories in sports is definitely pretty f***ing stupid, especially if you're a fan of one of their bigger rivals.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 The word "best" often gets misused when what people really mean is "surprising" Surprising I certainly agree with. But as a Jays fan I cannot call it one of the "best" stories, it's actually really goddamn annoying IMO

Not sure that I would define Laika as a Rays fanboy. BTS definitely is and it's not a good look. I definitely lost a lot of respect for that guy after he became a Rays fan. But let's not forget Hurl. His Rays fanboy-ism is probably worse than anyone on the entire board. But regardless, the Rays have been doing this for over 15 years now. That's a lot different than having a good farm system, a .500 season and then a good start through mid-June. lmao
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 I actually remember the same conversations back in 2008 or so. "Oh yeah, well let's see how the Rays do when they aren't picking first every year?" They actually did it. We'll see if Baltimore can do the same. History says the Rays are an anomaly though.
rookiefuzz Verified Member Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 The O's have been garbage for a while and we're long past the Adam Jones, Chris Davis, Manny Machado, Showalter era of of the shitbirds. As much as I always cheer for the Jays, it's hard not to enjoy seeing the young kids succeed. Such a great story and we'll see how and where it goes.

Yup the difference will be how the Baltimore FO compliments that young talent. They could spend money on a bunch of guys and those contracts end up being duds. As well, how long does their window stay open for is another question. It's fair to say that Baltimore is an exciting young team to watch out for and they are. I wouldn't praise them as one of the best organizations until they go out there and show they're perennial contenders year in and out. Still, their FO has done a great job drafting and with player development. I don't know why some Jays posters on here go crazy when you suggest that.

If I ever visit Camden Yards, I'll buy maybe a special cap or t-shirt. When I visit a new ballpark, I always buy a cap or a player t-shirt or something that I can't get here in Toronto as a souvenir. It's something I've done since 2007 since I started visiting other ballparks down in the US. Don't see what the issue is. I bought a Rockies alternate cap when I went to Coors Field in 2018. Doesn't mean I hate the Blue Jays lol. And obviously, Toronto's biggest homer Brownie19 liked your post haha. It's too bad he lives in his Blue Jays bubble.

I have a Longoria jersey and a Rays hat myself. My parents are in Port Charlotte so I've seen upwards of 15 TB spring training games over the years. I personally love their ability to remain a sustainable winner with no fans or money. It's a pain the ass as a Jays fan, but I'm a baseball fan first and foremost. I have an old Miguel Tejada O's jersey too. I think I bought it because it was 90% off or something - happy to mail it to you.

This is what he said “We have stuff that we look at from a scouting and evaluation perspective that, as I’ve said before, it’s very different from looking at the back of a baseball card. We hope that we get a bounce back from anyone that we bring in here.” “You may not get a great outcome on everything, but we see stuff with Aaron Hicks that we like, and it feels good like a good fit for us. I hope this is a shot in the arm for him, and I hope he helps us out and helps us win some games.” I don't know what you could be looking at that would say Hicks is gonna rake. Maybe magic.

This is just this morning, lmao Nah man. It's got to the point on this board where you have two extremes. One side is 100% pro Blue Jays/Atkins while on the other side you have some trolls who complain nonstop when the Jays are losing which we've always had. Then there is a group of posters who present a middle ground and who are rational, have thoughtful and insightful discussion but when they criticize something about this team or FO, they get attacked like they're trolls or non-stop complainers by the pro Blue Jay side. I spoke with another member on here and he said the same thing. I've never seen the message board this divided ever. Like literally a World War could start based on arguments about the Moreno/Varsho trade which gets brought up everyday haha. Or heck, you can't even comment or say anything positive about the Orioles without being bombarded. It's got to the point where it's not even pleasant anymore.

I know some have been heated exchanges but regardless no hard feelings so hope everything is cool. We both want the Blue Jays to succeed and win at the end of the day, that's the most important.

I remember a lot of posters on here a couple of years ago loved Aaron Hicks (sorry Spanky haha). He was pretty solid in 2017 and 2018. He definitely is better than Ramiel Tapia. Nothing wrong with targeting players off the scrap heap who have showed previous success before when you need to fill in a certain position. Worst case, if Hicks was really struggling he likely would be let go after two weeks.
