Not a ton of sample available of either of them pitching in shorter stints, but I can't help but wonder if perhaps a White/Kikuchi piggyback would be a much more effective 5th starter situation than either of them separately. Both of them going out with a mindset of being asked to get say 9-12 outs each.

 

Likely tough to pull off unless the BP includes at least one guy with options who can be cycled down to Buffalo for a fresh arm.

Having an opener might not be a bad idea. Jays have a ton of RP depth - use a 7th inning arm as an opener and have White/Kikuchi get 9-12 outs each.

I believe that's feasible, I'm sure they'll do so if arm wrestled into that. I think it'd work fine.

It was actually a grace of God that we picked up Thompson. I can't even think of anyone in the minors that can even go 5 innings. Is it NRI Drew Hutchison? Hatch?

 

The prospects coming up have like 10 innings in AA with huge walk rates. They're far away.

Thompson, Francis, Hatch and for the 2nd half you can add in Zulueta and Tiedemann, which I highly doubt on the latter. In the end, if we use this many starters, we're f***ed like most rotations. I really don't see the point. The depth is coming.

It would be nice if the Jays skipped the No. 5 spot when they could during the season, though not sure they'll do that or if there are any spots in the schedule where they could. Minimize the chances you use Kikuchi or White and then for that week gives you an extra BP arm with some length.

 

I remember when a 4 man starting staff was the norm. Hell, the WhiteSox used a 3 man staff one yr till they dropped dead.

That's true, and if I remember correctly Pittsburgh carried an 8 man staff for a bit. Platoons ran defense like crazy so more position players were needed. Back in the mid 80's we platooned 3b, left field, dh and catcher. And in terms of offence, a walk was treated like an insult. I remember Damaso Garcia swinging at balls in the dirt because he wanted a pitch to hit.

He believed he could eradicate arm injuries. Instead after his playing career he threw screwballs at the dog catcher. Fun connection, Marshall's screwball was taught to 1 person Brett Honeywell Sr. Who taught it to his son...who was asked to stop throwing it by the Rays and he refused. My guess is if you are a dog catcher, stay out of BHJ's neighbourhood.

went into a Italian resturant and we ordered pizza. Too make a long story short, there was delay after delays pushing to over an hour. Finally a friend pulled out his cell phone and ordered a pizza to be delvered to the resturant. The delivered pizza came first and we left!
