Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 We missed out on what? A s***** 5th starter? Had a really amazing 2022 season hes got potential....for 8 mill with that kind of upside and command, looks like a really safe sign.

He's like 33. He has no potential. The f***ing Pirates signed him, which is all you need to know. He'll soak up 160 innings there and prolong his dying career another year. Nothing to see here.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 I’m learning the new market inefficiency is to just sign every player so the other teams can’t field a roster

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2023 Author Posted December 19, 2023 Time for a walk in Gaia boys, with the balancing pup Why do I get the feeling that a "walk in Gaia with the balancing pup" is a euphemism for an acid trip
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Preller making more moves then shapiro and he's bankrupt
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Pretty nasty breaking splitter on Matsui with not the greatest fastball command. Could be an ok 7th or 8th inning guy if everything goes to script for them. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/yuki-matsui/sa3023348/stats?position=P
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 I think a good comparable of Teo, when you’re looking at risk profile is Chapman. High whiffs, high K, big power and loud contact when he does connect. Thing is, Chapman walks at double the rate, still runs the bases well and is a major plus on D. Teo is average D at best, (likely below average) and still bad baserunner. He’s a passable option if every other well of options runs dry but he wouldn’t be a priority get for me. I don’t even know if I’d want to give him Gurriel Jr money tbh. May end up having to, but I think a 1 year pillow deal might be the better option, with a club option or something. The strangest thing about Matt Chapman is his elite 94th percentile chase rate. The complete opposite of Teo. He just swings and misses way way too many pitches in the zone at a horrendous whiff rate. If he can ever fix that he will go off.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Chappy can be fixed. If he hits 245 with 20 hrs (obviously an injury plagued season) that defense is such a great floor. He's like guarenteed to be a 3 War player. Our need at 3b makes it a great fit. I think theres 260 35 hrs in there with a nice walk rate. Superstar potential right there. Seems way cheaper then Bellinger with Bellis injury history and super aggressive approach.

He’s a lock to hit 240 but with 40 hr and elite defence
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 So your comparing Matt Chapman to a 35% k rate and no skills on the baseball field? Quality post sir, hire this guy.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Dear Spirit please give Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro a baseball idea from God so they can put the best....most entertaining team on the field. Because they cannot pull the trigger. If you don't like Bellingers cost get off of it...I have no problem with that. The cubs won't go 8/200 guarenteed and if they do good on them.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 So far the best offseason is by the guy who is hamstrung (Prelliebabies) he got Micheal King for 1 expensive year of Soto. Plus my 3rd favorite catcher in the league.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Next year's FA class is kind of loaded: Soto Alonso Altuve Torres Adames Kim Bregman Bieber Burnes Buehler Fried Wheeler plus whoever comes over from Japan/Korea

Just gotta hope you can sign one or two of those guys.

Just gotta hope you can sign one or two of those guys. I want Bieber now. All hands on deck to get him, we could fleece them. Bieber will sign an Extension. Manoah, Pearson, Orelvis for the right to start Shane Bieber every 5th day and a guarenteed workhorse. I want Adames all hands on deck right now. Bo straight up for him.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Atkins last offseason and in previous years has done a very solid job at signing stopgap FA's to one-year deals. Plenty of options available who you could sign to play DH and LF. Just want to make sure you have some roster depth in case one of those guys don't end up panning out. Will be a little bit tricky to find a 3B to fit that FA stopgap description, unless they go after a vet such as Longoria or Donaldson or Escobar. Trade market for 3B might be the best option: either Polanco, JD Davis (if Giants sign Chapman) or Moncada.

OTOH maybe it soothes the fan base in replacing that core. ATL pulled that off with Swanson and Freeman walking after a WS ring. But you are right that the FO have been both good, and lucky, at adding WAR on 1 year stop gap deals.

Yeah there is also the option to trade for some of those guys if the price isn't that expensive and if you sign them to an extension. By going that route, you at least not risk losing out to certain names that you're targeting next offseason. Obviously Soto, Alonso, Altuve, Bregman, Wheeler and Fried won't be traded, unless their teams are out of it at the trade deadline. Cleveland and Milwaukee could move some of their guys for sure.

Hopefully they could add some WAR with a couple of stop gap deals. Just need to sign some bats with more power if they could and hope that Vladdy, Manoah, Kirk, Varsho and Springer could bounce back, which would help greatly.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 And that's unlikely of course because they're all on good teams Maybe the Mets are the exception haha but they plan on contending again in 2024. So they would only move Alonso right now if they got a similar type of player/pitcher who could help them as well in 2024.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 man, Hagashioka is not good Yeah he is man. He's a legendary framer the way he sucks that ball in. He's a vacuum and was so undervalued by Cashman.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Hearing the Red Sox are targetting Corbin Burnes hard. Hopefully they get him, I don't fear him especially with all the Lefty Bats we're going to have. Hopefully the Red Sox gave up a Indigo.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 McCutchen back to the Pirates on a 1 year deal. I like all these AL and NL Central teams making moves. Tigers, Royals, Reds and Pirates are all doing some things.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Articles flying around about Boras holding firm on 200 mil for Bellinger. F that.
