Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 I'd be floored if Ohtani considered Detroit for even a millisecond over other markets. I'd also be floored to see Detroit be even close to offering the kind of money it would take to sign him. That said, they certainly have the payroll space to do it. They're only projected at just over 70 million for 2024 and have spent big in the past. Ya Detroit isn't a desirable location but who knows what Ohtani's motivations are
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Author Posted November 27, 2023 Ya Detroit isn't a desirable location but who knows what Ohtani's motivations are Yeah, once a guy is in the kind of territory that he's in... 13 years 625 million from Detroit ... vs 13 years 600 million from say the Dodgers. Would a guy really go to Detroit just for the extra 2 million per season?

Tigers signing Maeda is just interesting with Ohtani and Yamamoto on the market, and the Tigers payroll space.

That when Yamamoto and his entourage will be in the US talking with interested teams.

Ohtani has spent his entire MLB career in the LA area already, so he either loves it there or wants a change of scenery. Downtown LA is really no different than Downtown Detroit lol. But LA has a lot better surrounding areas like Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Malibu, along with better weather all year round and it's a bigger market. I doubt he signs in Detroit but if they end up signing Yamamoto, could make things interesting.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Heyward staying with LA for 1 year 9M Nice move by the Dodgers keeping him. Wouldn't have minded Heyward here as a platoon bat in LF or DH, and as a backup CF at that price.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 So much better, I know. Yeah the Jays rotation is definitely better, but aren't you worried about their ages? Our top 4 arms are all above 30 and pretty expensive. '
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Don't forget our #6 Wes Parsons 32 yo Isn't that dude more like the #8 starter?

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Author Posted November 27, 2023 Makes sense, he's clearly too young for the Cards rotation.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Blue Jays rotation by age for 2024: Gausman - 33 Berrios - 30 Bassitt - 35 Kikuchi - 33 Manoah - 26 I personally don't see a big concern with aging pitchers (neither in St. Louis or TO). Often by then, there's a lot less volatility and it doesn't seem like they are more injury prone (in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the opposite). My gut says pitchers are aging better than position players these days.

Wouldn't have minded Heyward here as a platoon bat in LF or DH, and as a backup CF at that price. That's one guy we are in agreement on. I thought he would make a tremendous 4th outfielder/platoon bat but it's not surprising he would choose to return to the Dodgers.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Heyward staying with LA for 1 year 9M That's way too much for Heyward IMO. I suspect there's a 70% chance that he turns back into a pumpkin next year.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 In the big picture, it's still $25M more. That's a cup of coffee for Ohtani man. I'd be shocked if he just took the most money offered to him. He's going to go somewhere that's he's comfortable and believes in the FO and the Ownerships vision, both for their use of him and in the future of the team.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Isn't that dude more like the #8 starter? Well Atkins was proud to mention Francis (a 2 IP reliever), Mitch White (DFAd then brought back then has to pass through waivers next year if we send him down) and Wes Parsons (the only actual SP that might be optionable?) as rotation depth. I'm guessing it'll just be Ricky T for 3 innings at a time though.

I'm guessing it'll just be Ricky T for 3 innings at a time though. White was throwing bullets/sitting mid to upper 90's to end the AAA season so he likely has a legitimate opportunity to be the swingman/6th starter. I would guess Francis is more than likely to be stretched back out in spring training next season. He was hurt in the spring and didn't have a chance to be fully stretched out before his eventual call-up. Maybe Parsons would receive a callup before Tiedemann if he's deemed not sufficiently prepared for MLB, but that leaves him as a more likely 8th rotation option vs 6th.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Yeah I was kind of buying them as darkhorse AL Central candidates last year. Obviously didn't happen but maybe they can do it this year. Mildly interesting team but the Central helps. Yup I think they’re looking decent. Baez contract is so bad
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Is Maeda a prelude to a big offer for Ohtani? Getting him, along with the Twins divesting assets, would immediately make the Tigers the division favourite. If not for Baez, the Tigers would be in a good position for a big Ohtani offer. Current 2024 payroll is $85M. $25M of that is for the aforementioned Baez, lol. Hmmmm I doubt it but could be. I think they just saw a good pitcher available on a two year deal
