That's terrible.

Man - I was just looking at Mookie's stats and thinking, "what a f***ing stud that guy is". Already up to 57 career WAR by his age 30 season and perhaps still getting better. His bat is incredible, he's playing SS, 2nd base and RF. One of the very best athletes of our generation IMO (look at how he excelled in other sports - and still does in bowling). This is the type of franchise player you never let go. Red Sox are COMPLETE morons and I'd bet he retires a Dodger - probably as a legendary Dodger player.

For a second, I though - I wonder if he's starting to 'catch' Trout. NOPE. Trout is at 85 career WAR through his age 31 season. I think sometimes people forget just how good Trout is. It's a f***ing shame to see his body start to break down on him. With health, this is a guy who may have retired with a career WAR in the 140 range. Even with the injuries, we may still be looking at 110ish.

To put that into perspective:

Arod - 114

Pujols - 89

Miggy - 68

Griffey - 78

Jeter - 73

Bagwell - 80

Chipper - 84

Beltre - 83

Those are the best players of my youth.....I'm in awe really. Then I consider the GOAT himself. Bonds - 164!!!!

If we could rewind to 2019 before COVID and injuries, Trout would have had to average 7.2 WAR over the next 13 years (playing through age 40) to catch Bonds in career WAR.

It's crazy to me that Betts could be two years from passing Miggy in WAR. Obviously I knew he was on a HoF track. But he's going to be a first-ballot, all-time great.

These elite players kind of have two legs to their careers.

There is the pre-30 segment where they collect WAR based on pure physical talent.

Then there is the 30-onward segment where they try to collect WAR with declining pure physical talent. So the ability to learn new skills, adapt, retain physical abilities, stay healthy, etc. matter so much.

Guys like Derek Jeter are only HOFers because they were good in the second leg.

Guys like Mookie can go from a HOFer to a legend by being good in the second leg...

Ya but Mookie actually improved his physical tools because his bat speed is way up

I guess kind of to your point, old guys are learning what physical tools to emphasize bc it's not like you're that unathletic over 30. Freeman and goldschmidt steal bags

Yeah embracing new training methods can be part of it.

If it can be improved then there is a skill component.

It's like a SP ten years ago picking up weighted balls for the first time at 31 years old

Or what you decide to take. From 2006, Verlander is still throwing the same going on 41yo. It’s a little odd, really. If he’s not running an HGH program throughout the off-season, I’d be surprised

Yep - same program that Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson were on eh?

I can’t take anything serious when someone says “eh”.

I just saw a clip with Sabathia playing for the Brewers, man, dude was huge.

The whole PED thing is a farce anyway. Roger Clemens never failed a drug test, like Randy Johnson never failed one. If it was a good dude, he couldnt have been taking something. Peyton Manning had HGH delivered to his house and there’s prob not one person in 100 that would call him a cheater.

David Ortiz. Big Pappy testing positive since 2003. Welcome to the Hall.

The hypocrisy and double standard with Ortiz bothers me. Not that he doesn't belong in the HOF. But lets let the others in too.

At the time Bonds was doing PEDS it wasn't even technically outside the rules. Regardless he is the best hitter I've ever seen.

Meh, he's half a player. I wouldn't have voted for him. Look at his numbers in Minnie and tell me he didn't start the regimen in Beantown.

Thats fair. Martin and Votto both have more career WAR. DH. I remember him well in MINN and he was very average.

Your suspicion is clearly warranted given how he took off in BOS. His playoff successes and that huge market didn't hurt his vote.

Ohtani wants that MVP trophy it seems.

“He’s going to play,” general manager Perry Minasian said before the game. “As far as the second opinion, we are working on that. As we sit here today, he’s going to play until he tells us he’s not. Obviously, he’s having a special year and is a big part of this club. We’re excited to still have him in the lineup.”

“He has a good idea of how this goes,” Minasian said. “But we’re not looking that far. We’re worried about today. He loves playing. That’s what he does. The fact that there’s an opportunity to still play games and help us try to win, says a lot about him.”

I don't actually think I can handle a world where Harold Baines is in and Votto is kept out.

Excellent point. However, have you looked at the world around us lately? Irrationality and illogical decisions are guaranteed. It's almost a guaranteed that what you're afraid of will happen.
