Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 still can't believe Roy Halladay's screeching widow made his HOF plaque have no logo on the cap reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Makes my blood boil every time I think about it
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Makes my blood boil every time I think about it actually it remains hard to believe that the Hall of Fame people even gave her a f***ing choice
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Yeah the fact that she had any say in it whatsoever is just absurd. He was on record as to wanting to go in as a Blue Jay and frankly what does she know about baseball to the point that she gets to choose what cap a HoFer gets to wear? She has zero credentials to make a decision like that. She clearly just enjoyed her time in Philadelphia more than she did in Toronto for personal reasons and that went into the decision. It also seems like because her and her kids are American that she felt like the Phillies could kiss her ass more easily moving forward. I don't have anything specific to point to in that instance but that was a general feeling I got at the time.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 The Phillies are kind of classless for going along with it as well. It's like when an acquaintance is needlessly and overly generous to the point it's awkward. In those instances the correct thing to do is politely decline.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Why? It was ugly when they didn’t sign him in FA? I don’t recall
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 The Jays were unquestionably the best team for a 10 year period from the early 80's to 90's. I don't know how many teams outside of the Yankees have put up 11 straight winning seasons in MLB's long history but my guess is not a lot. They've had an extreme lack of representation in the HOF. Until now it's been Alomar and a few guys with cups of coffee at the end of their career. McGriff is a good addition. Stieb would complete it. I know Stieb is a tier below Brown, Wells and Pettitte career wise so it will be an uphill battle for him. But I think he had a better peak than those guys. Braves.
keggy Verified Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 still can't believe Roy Halladay's screeching widow made his HOF plaque have no logo on the cap reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee The wife didn't respect her husband's wishes, but the HOF giving her the choice was a purely emotional move. They put themselves in the position of either making an egregious error or having a public dispute with a recently widowed woman. What if she said something completely ridiculous like 'He grew up in Colorado, so he should go in with a Rockies hat'?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Since she was a widow no one wanted to offer any pushback at all. I think one reporter asked her a good question and he might have even had a couple of decent follow ups as well.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Author Posted January 25, 2023 Anyone have a clue which hat McGriff is going to wear? From an article I was perusing: He played 636 games with the Braves, 578 with the Toronto Blue Jays and 577 with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Of those teams, he had the most success with the Braves, winning one World Series and making three All-Star teams with Atlanta. If McGriff went in as a Brave, he’d be the 11th player to go into the Hall with an Atlanta hat. Toronto has one Hall of Famer, and coincidentally it’s Roberto Alomar, who went to the Blue Jays in a trade that involved McGriff. If it’s with the Devil Rays, which, by the way, McGriff is a Tampa native, he would be the organization’s first.

He's going in a Jay.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 The Roy Halladay decision still pisses me off. His wife royally f***ed that up. It was clear where his heart was.

I'd say it's between the Jays/Braves. He was in the twilight of his career with the Rays.

He was in the twilight of his career with the Rays. I kind of think he might go in without a cap. No idea how he'd pick between Toronto and Atlanta - knowing he will piss off the fans in the one he doesn't choose. But man - Crime Dog was a f***ing machine. I'm so f***ing happy for him.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I don't see why he'd go in with the Jays. Doesn't seem like there is any ill will there but we are his last pick IMO. We traded him away and he had more accolades with the Braves. He'd be Tampa's only HoFer and lives there so I could see why he'd want Tampa over the Jays too.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Now they don’t have worry how many wins or strikeouts he gets I guess that’s the good thing when you find a 30th rounder. They haven’t been dreaming of the mega deal yet

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 That could end up real pretty, for the org.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I'll just leave this right here... Going in as a Jay. Confirmed.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Going in as a Jay. Confirmed. Yep I stand corrected.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Yep I stand corrected. I was sold that night it's the Jays.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Going in as a Jay. Confirmed. All the simple minds at it again. There needs to be more context. How do you know that wasn’t just a question about his time in Toronto? You’d have to hear the whole press conference to get it
The_DH Verified Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Going in as a Jay. Confirmed. Wonder if the Jays will retire the number now.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I was sold that night it's the Jays. Ah. I didn’t know you had a feeling. I’m on board now. Confirmed in my book

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2023 Author Posted January 25, 2023 Going in as a Jay. Confirmed. Until he says the words confirming it, I'm not believing it. As of a day or two agao he still has not confirmed it himself.
