G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Real nice piece of business here. Honestly, I take Bassitt at $63M over Senga at $75M given Bassitt is actually a proven starter in the majors. Blue Jays only $8M away from the luxury tax now. Gotta think we cross it after maybe signing another OF? Still probably adding to the bullpen too. Agreed We needed a sure thing SP to slot 3 or 4
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 YES!! I just saw this! I have been saying this is what we should do and my telepathy worked. Great move!
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Carlos Danger is going to cum Twice already... The guy beside me wasn't happy....
polar bear Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Are middle of the rotation starters really worth $20 million a year. God damn. Decent signing all things considered. This division is a different animal though. Why do fans worry so much about other peoples money
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Why do fans worry so much about other peoples money Because we know the team operates with a budget and wasting a portion of it on s***** players is going to limit the team? Not a challenging concept. Not that Bassitt is a s***** player at all - by all accounts he's a very durable and consistent performer. He's a good addition to this team. To be honest, he's like an older version of Berrios (before he s*** the bed last year).

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Why do fans worry so much about other peoples money I care because I would like us to have money to spend later. It’s just wild to me where we are. When I think of a 20 million dollar a year Starter I think of a top of a rotation Starter. Going to have to reprogram my brain.

I too had to quickly re-calibrate my head how insane the market has been this year and how much sense this signing makes. This is the steroid era of offseason deals!
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Why do fans worry so much about other peoples money Well, as has been discussed, every $20m aav contract to Toronto becomes consequential. More so than other teams. But this seems like a good use of resources, all things considered.

Makes a QO to Stripling look relatively cheap in hindsight. Given the market its a reasonable deal.

But this seems like a good use of resources, all things considered. This deal expires right as potential Vlad/Bo extensions would kick in. Rogers is a massively wealthy owner and Shapiro has stated that the team isn't artificially constrained by the CBT limit, so this deal really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Eventually the team is going to need to start developing some more starting pitching though, as they have a veritable shitload of money tied up in the rotation for next season.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 When the rest of the league zigs (longer deals to lower AAV), Ross Atkins zags (shorter term higher AAV).
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 People thinking another SP i don't think that is going to happen because i think 3months in it will be Tiedemann if he is cruising in AAA I agree. I think Tiedes has that type of potential. The only question is inning limitations. Having another guy to plug at #5 instead of relying on question marks like Kikuchi and White, would be a better stop-gap until Tiedemann is ready.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 There's really nothing to like about Bassitt if you're being objective. Old, velo declining. No stuff. No track record of health. K rate dropped to just over 7 in the 2nd half last year! You need Ks because we can't shift. Solid chance he gets outperformed by multiple bargain SPs.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Nice pickup. Really solid rotation assuming Manoah continues his current path, Gausman gets the luck on his side this season and even a half assed return to Berrios normal and 1-4 is beautiful. Too much to hope for Kikuchi to actually be effective, but a guy can dream
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Outside of Rodon, he's definitely the best of the rest. Losing the pick isn't great, but he's solid. Rodon has a pick with him also..

I normally agree with you about baseball related stuff 90% of the time, but not this one. Bassitt has been consistently sneaky good. He just gets the job done.. With his type of stuff, no reason to see why he can't continue the next 3 years. If you look at percentile charts etc, maybe not sexy, but at the end of the day a consistently good lay.

If you can get whiffs without that then that's like the next best thing. When you have neither, you're walking a tight rope.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 People thinking another SP i don't think that is going to happen because i think 3months in it will be Tiedemann if he is cruising in AAA We also have Kikuchi and White… I think people are setting their expectations a bit too high. We’re paying 4 starters 20 million each this year (one on the DL), and we also have a young top 3 Cy finisher. Kikuchi should be perfectly fine as 5th starter as long as he doesn’t walk 3 batters per inning. And White is better than people give him credit for IMO. He’s a guy like Stripling that could become good with some small tweaks to his pitch sequencing.

Bassitt's sinker velocity has held steady over the last 3 seasons, so declining velocity really doesn't appear to be the case. He doesn't rely on stuff to get his outs as he is elite at inducing soft contact. It appears as though he's missed about 7 total starts over the last three seasons, so he's been pretty damn durable/reliable. A few months of lower k output doesn't automatically mean that he will have the same issue for an entire season. This looks to be a really astute signing. Bassitt isn't flashy by any means but he has been a reliable mid-rotation starter since he became a full time starter in MLB. That is exactly what this team needed.

If you can get whiffs without that then that's like the next best thing. When you have neither, you're walking a tight rope. Bassit from June 11th, so prior to actual second half only had four games where he went less than 6 innings. Of those 4 games, one was a 5 inning game and one was the last game of the season for a playoff team. During that stretch he went 7 or plus innings five times and he went 8 or plus innings three times. All this on a playoff team in a playoff race with a deep pen. Point being, even if his K numbers went down second half, his overall work kept him in games 6 plus innings on average. SP eating up innings, is what we need and want, so we can save our pen this year and stay in games and give our offense a chance to put it away.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Rather Quintana if you're going for the old guy who gets weak contact. Unless you throw f***ing hard or get whiffs somehow, you're all the same to me. Balloon could pop any moment, just give me the cheapest, healthiest one.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 3 years in this market is exceptional, well done Ross.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Not much left to do. Just sign Conforto and tell Moreno to bring 5 different gloves to spring training because he's getting reps in CF and every infield position. Hahaha!!!
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Can't complain about this signing.
jerb Verified Member Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Eno Sarris @enosarris Chris Bassitt locates his hard stuff really well (top-ten Location+ on the four-seamer) has good stuff and locations on his breaking balls (surprisingly top curve Stuff+ last season despite low velo), and could easily throw more breaking balls. Decent recipe for aging, imo.
