I think it's just a given that any player or team staff member would give the ball to Judge. I doubt Judge or the Yankees even know or care which person in the bullpen caught the ball.

If I got it I would 100% not give it up. Too much money. Would auction it. Although #62 if he hits it will be more valuable for sure.

Bro “swag” stuff doesn’t make up for at least a mil. Would go up depending on what other balls there were on the market idk can’t see the magical 61 number going for less than a million in todays age. Maybe double idk

I wasn't suggesting "swag". I was thinking $$ + some swag. I'm not suggesting Judge is going to give up $1M to him, but say $100K + swag would be a nice gesture.

I wonder if a bullpen catcher or clubhouse attendant would be forced to give the ball back if they caught it on the job. Would probably be worth resigning over if a court couldn't compel you to give the ball back to the team.

Here is the legal landscape as far as I understand it:

- the home team owns the baseballs

- the fans who buy tickets have a right to keep balls that enter the stands. this is an implied term of the contract as baseball has operated this way for 100+ years. some teams might even make it explicit in their fine print?

So a stadium employee, cop, or team employee who does not relinquish a baseball that the home team wants back is probably s*** out of luck and has no legal legs to stand on.

Makes sense. But would the team actually pursue the issue legally just to get the ball to Judge?

I bet MLB would do it / pressure the team to do it.

Letting anybody who is not a fan keep an important ball would be a bad precedent. From a policy perspective there are no positives to that.

Need to flip that s*** to a fan quickly with a quick bro head nod that implies you'll be splitting the money!

Will Maris Jr. shut his pie hole already? I'm tired of this loser parading himself around like anyone actually cares what he thinks. He needs to go back to selling insurance.

Ruth hit 60 in a 154 game season. Judge had 60 through 154 games as well. Maris had 59 through 154 games. Bonds hit 73! Who cares if he was on roids, so were the pitchers he was taking yard. I'd get the argument if Bonds hit 62 homers in 162 games but come on, he hit 73.

If Maris Jr. wants to put asterisks on people he should look to his old man first because if anyone deserves one it's Maris Sr. 59 homers in 154 games and 61 homers in 162 games is the least impressive season among all the 60+ homer seasons and that includes McGwire and Sosa who hit far more than 61 and also did it multiple times.

TL;DR Get bent Maris Jr.!

No kidding. The nerd didn't even play baseball. Who cares what he has to say about a record that's been crushed by Bonds. Judge is still 12 away from the one true home run record!

You could even take it further. Yankee fans were whining that the Jays walked Judge on a few 3-2 counts this series. Well if walks should factor into the home run records then guess what, Bonds walked 177 times in 2001 which lead to only 476 ABs. Judge has only walked 106 times which has lead to 552 ABs. Maris walked 94 times which gave him 590 ABs. So not only did Bonds obliterate the record, he did so in far fewer ABs.

And then you have Roger Maris Jr. who despite having MLB caliber genes hit ZERO home runs.

Bonds was a freak, steroids or not. And we can't effectively prove that guys like Maris/Ruth etc. never juiced. Plus everyone was juicing during the Bonds era. Plus he never actually failed a drug test so.... are we even certain Judge is clean?

Im fine with saying Judge now shares the AL homerun record. That is true. To say he is the "true homerun record holder" though is a bit of a crap statement.

Beyond even that if you look at his spray chart about 14 of those home runs were hit to the short porch in right field.

Bonds morphed into a different human being. He became unrecognizable compared to what he looked like in Pittsburgh.

Trust me when I say that I have acquired pretty damning evidence that Judge has been corking his bat. I am currently assessing how to get this information to the authorities.

Bonds was like Trout-level player clean. A mutant with the juice. I don't think its fair to vilify him for taking steroids after the fact, when it wasn't even frowned upon at the time he was doing it.

Playing baseball on steroids is one of the least troublesome thing Bonds did

Meh….First 5 seasons. Trout>Bonds. I saw them both.

Who says Maris didn't roid up?

Maybe even Ruth used some kind of drug concoction to slightly tip the odds in his favour.

Ruth got sick from injecting bull semen extract. Seriously.

I read on the internet that it was sheep testicle extract. Not sure about that one.

Fact, Coca Cola had cocaine in it until 1929. The Babe hit 60 HR in 1927.

I saw it in ken burns' baseball series.

You assume that Maris wasn't on anything illegal.

Yeah... at the very least he doesn't look jacked up like McGuire, Bonds, and Sosa.

Trout-level clean? Have you seen Trout's neck... it's a f***ing tree stump.

My favourite Barry Bonds thing is that his 73 HR season was not even his best year.

The following season was better

32.4% walk rate

7.7% k rate

lmaooooooooooooooooo

2398 pitches seen with a 6.3% whiff rate, that's 151 swings and misses

he walked 198 times.

dude walked more then he came up dry on a swing. that's insane

Bonds' numbers are insane and there's all sorts of mind blowing stats that you can pull from them.

I kind of get the steroid arguments around McGwire and Sosa. I don't necessarily agree but I can at least see the argument for excluding them from the HoF. But Bonds is on a whole other planet and Aaron Judge can't even carry his jockstrap for him.

Posted

Yeah Sosa and McGwire are close enough to fringe hall guys even if they put up their numbers clean. 60 and 66 WAR.

Bonds had nearly 50 WAR by 27, before he played a game for the Giants... it's not even the same discussion. He's a 100 WAR player without roids, probably.

The steroid argument for keeping Bonds out of the HoF fails the "but for" test.

If Maris was on anything, it would be amphetamines, which exploded during WWII to keep soldiers awake, and became prevalent in sports.

Everyone had their own stash of bennies.
