Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 Pretty sure Schneider is just Atkins little analytics puppet at this point. Does he even make any of the decisions lol? So wait, every time we watch Money Ball we are like, f*** Art Howe!! Play the players Billy wants where he wants, and bring in the RPs he wants when he wants. We are cheering for Billy the whole movie and Art Howe comes out of looking like a boob.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 I doubt he makes any decisions beyond who bats where in the lineup ...even that, how does one explain Varsho batting clean-up earlier in the season when he's NEVER done it before
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Didn't Schneider just tie Cito Gaston this week for fastest ever Blue Jays manager to 100 wins? Let's fire him! He also has the highest Win% of all managers in Bluejays history. He's 3rd for active managers.

Art wasn't happy about that and has spoken out about the movie several times. They needed his character to resist the analytical movement for theatrics; however, there's certainly a possibility that he didn't initially buy into it (or at all).

tossingthiscoin Verified Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Also, Espinal and White should be gone as soon as we activate Ryu and Green. They are hurting the Jays.
tossingthiscoin Verified Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 It's going to be very hard to sleep after this dreadful loss. It's the worst loss since game 2 of the wildcard series against the Mariners.

Everyone else had pitched too many inning in the previous games. They were Red light to pitch. Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Then I guess Schneider's obsession to pull the starters too early is really costing us lately. It all started with his idiotic decision to pull Kikuchi when he had 75 pitches in the fifth inning. Cost us at least a couple of losses so far.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Schneider managed this game fine. Bassitt, like most pitchers, starts to fade against lineups the third time through the order. Regardless, we got the ball to Eric Swanson (our closer that night since Romano was out) with a 4 run lead. Even then, Swanson pitched fine but the Dodgers got some BABIP ******** to drop. Rojas single - .150 xBA Smith single (Chapman error) - .210 xBA Taylor single - .250 xBA Even Outman's single had a less than 50% chance to be a hit. I guess you could blame Schneider for pulling Whit instead of Espinal? Probably not a ton of difference between the two unless you rely heavily on this year's limited sample. And what happened wasn't even a defensive miscue, it was just pure laziness on Espinal's part.

If management doesn't trust White to get 3 outs with a 4 run lead, Swanson running on fumes and everyone else unavailable White is literally useless to the team.

And that play by Espy was most definitely a defensive miscue.

WryNGinger Verified Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 This loss wasn't on Schneider per se but was it a predictable outcome based on his perchance for pulling starters too early too often. It results in guys with bullets left in the chamber sitting on the bench and thinking they could have gone longer AND guys being used too much or being left in too long in relief. Not including Bassitt tonight but jays left at least 40 pitches from their starters the week or so as wasted pitches the BP had to make up.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 So you are going to ignore all of the BABIP data I posted to argue semantics about what to call Espinal giving up on a play. Got it. Subbing Witt and not moving him to 2b is not defensible both from a defensive standpoint and from an offensive stand point if the game goes extras, which it of course did. Part of Witt’s D is a reliability, Veteran presence and a smart baseball guy.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Bassitt wasn't that sharp today (5.88 FIP). His ERA the first two times through the order is in the 3s and the 3rd time through it's well over 5. And oh yeah, he was at 105 pitches after issuing a leadoff walk that inning. I am no fan of Schneider but I don't get all the complaining about him not letting Bassitt pitch longer.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 Bassitt didn't pitch all that great and starting the inning with a leadoff walk and at 105 pitches, he just didn't have it tonight. This goes to show that the team doesn't have the pen that could close out a game starting in the 6th inning against an elite team like the Dodgers. Roster construction is the issue here more than anything. Schneider needs to work on his substitutions. Should have kept Merrifield in the game. He's been one of their more reliable hitters and plays solid D.

Whit after moving from LF midgame (does that matter? idk) or Espinal after having played 2B all game? Espinal has graded out pretty damn good defensively in his career up until the limited sample this year. According to the metrics he had a GG caliber year at 2B last year. Whit also has generally graded out pretty well. Whit is definitely the better player so I suppose the remote chance that the game goes to extras should be a factor as you pointed out. Does giving Whit who is old a very small breather during this west coast road trip with no off days play a factor at all? Idk there either. So I guess we can hang Schneider for this but it doesn't seem like it's a total fiasco on his part unlike Game 2 of last year.

I agree he was a great 2B last year, but in this year, his OAA proves that he's not capable of defending instead of Whit at 2B.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 I haven't seen one person complain about Bassitt being pulled today? Tons of whining about pulling starters early but I guess no one meant Bassitt? All the whining comes from using our good relievers in all of these 1 run/extra inning butt clenchers without having an off day 9 games in a row?

I agree he was a great 2B last year, but in this year, his OAA proves that he's not capable of defending instead of Whit at 2B. OAA doesn't stabilize that quickly. If you think he was a "great 2B" last year then 30 games of data this year shouldn't change your mind so definitively.

Sure, but even looking at his other defensive stats like DRS and URS, Whit is clearly a better defender than Espinal. I didn't even count on tonight's game.

You can defend Espinal and Schneider as much as you want, but replacing Whit as Espinal at 2B was a mistake and clearly costed us.
