Dagagad Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Actually kinda insane how one bad 10 game stretch cost him his job. Gotta think he would still be here if the Jays won like 2 or 3 more games in that stretch. If we had league average pitching the month before that, he could have had the exact same 10 game stretch and kept his job. I do feel pretty bad for him. But it’s the job of a manager to be the fall guy.
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Anyone else get the feeling that there might be a big shakeup of the composition of the team come trade deadline. Like I get the feeling that Shatkins might want to break up the barrio a bit. Becoming too much of a clique down by the end of the dugout?
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Bring on John Schneider! He's the correct choice. Already won championships managing the Vancouver Canadians (2011), Dunedin Blue Jays (2017) and NH Fishercats (2018).

We are way too close to be out of the playoffs to sell from the major league roster at this point. That ship has sailed.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Look, I think the nail in the coffin was the return from the road trip out west where he said he thought they played well. Shapiro saw that and lost his mind I bet. If you can’t recognize as a manager that there is a problem you are beyond hope. Shapiro probably went to Atkins and prompted the firing. “Our results are not commensurate with our investment” would have been uttered at some point. Charlie seems like a decent human being and I wish him well but as someone once said, “this isn’t the try hard league, this is the get it done league”.

Like I get the feeling that Shatkins might want to break up the barrio a bit. Becoming too much of a clique down by the end of the dugout? I agree the end of the dugout is a problem but the only logical piece to move is Gurriel. Can’t move Teoscar because that’s selling at pretty much rock bottom and nobody else is the barrio is getting moved. That being said I’d gladly trade Gurriel. His biggest asset is his salary and is completely expendable in my view.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 He coached Bo & Vlad through the entirety of minors didn't he? Not sure about every stop. But there was a lot of overlap.
Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 IM not saying sell for prospects. Im saying major leaguer for major leaguer. Only one I see moving at this stage would be Teo (but it'd be selling quite low) - Gurriel too hot, Vlad too cornerstone, Berrios too much money. Problem is we don't really have anyone to take over an RF spot unless you bank on Tapia/Zimmer taking that spot forever. No real OF depth in AAA unless they select Nathan Lukes' contract. Can trade Gurriel (but that'd dent the offense quite a bit atm) and get Biggio to LF

Trade a prospect for Benintendi.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Let’s see how the batting order is affected. If it changes than we know Charlie had control over it, if it doesn’t than someone else calling the shots.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Charlie seems like a good guy. He served his purpose and I’m not going to celebrate someone losing their job, but this is the right call. Something had to give and the Jays need someone else to lead this team. My sentiments exactly. Wish him all the best. Move that needed to be made. Now over to the FO to address the gaps.

RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Plenty of ways to be creative with trades if you are inclined to make moves.

Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Plenty of ways to be creative with trades if you are inclined to make moves. I wonder if the Angels would do Vlad + Kikuchi for Ohtani Arte just wants superstars and Minasian loves meh starting pitchers, perfect fit. (just a tongue in cheek, don't hate)
Sorrow Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 I have zero issues with Montoyo going, it seemed like he lost the players confidence. This article is a bit old but still managers don't really win or lose you games. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/most-managers-are-headed-to-the-hall-of-mediocrity/
Ray Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 It'll be really interesting to read the inevitable Athletic article that comes out of this. Seems like everything is pointing to Montoyo losing the clubhouse and inability to rally the troops together during tough stretches. His only strength is managing the clubhouse, and seemed his relationships with the players was irreparably damaged. This regime does not make reactive changes like the Angels and Phillies. They always talk about how good it is to have stability in all parts of the organization. It had to have gotten bad if they made this decision in-season.
Dagagad Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 I love all the yahoos on Twitter with their info about how they knew Charlie lost the clubhouse pre firing but didn’t post it til now. Sure..
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 His lineup management was awful. As well, getting swept in Seattle was probably icing on the cake and shouldn't happen at this juncture in the season. I don't blame him completely for the Blue Jays this season, but he definitely holds some blame and the manager is always the scapegoat. Definitely more blame lays on the Front Office and the players. Atkins had to do something. If this Blue Jays team misses the Postseason, he likely is gone at the end of the season as well. The Blue Jays had high expectations this season and were even considered one of the favourites for a World Series. Like Omar said, will be interesting to see how the lineup is managed now.

If it changes than we know Charlie had control over it, if it doesn’t than someone else calling the shots. Good call. That will be important to pay attention too. I would also say the short leash on SPs would be something to pay attention to. Maybe Schneider rides them longer to try and give the BP a break. That would be a good point that the manager has authority over that as well.

If you could guarantee me that atkins is gone if we miss the playoffs and replaced by guys from the Rays/Astros… I’ll take the L this season.

RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Watch Kikuchi takeoff now that Montoyo cant roast him publicly after every rough game.
vdartanian Verified Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 The vladdy incident last night was the final straw??? Only followed on Gameday - what was the issue with Vlad? Never mind kept reading and figured it out - thanks

Feel like one of Teo/Lourdes might be shipped out for pitching. Then prospects for a lefty OF

That would be a good point that the manager has authority over that as well. Another thing as well. He knew he had a weak bullpen. When a starter was rolling and had a good pitch count, he should have rode them an extra inning rather than taking them out after 5 or 6 innings. Again, the weak bullpen is on the FO, though Charlie should have understood and managed his roster accordingly.
