They have taken some gambles with giving mid tier money out to average players that they think they can get to perform. Grichuk, Kendrys Morales, Tanner Roark, Jaime Garcia, etc. Kikuchi might be another name to add to add to that list in time but we shall see.

But on the other hand they have hit on some of these signings big time. Semien and Ray being the prime examples.

The book is still out on the bigger deals they've done. Ryu looks real iffy right now but he was good enough in his first two years that the deal won't be a total disaster. Then there is Springer who looks great but had a frustrating year last year. If he can stay healthy the next 2 or 3 seasons that one should be fine as well.

Does Springer look great?

Admittedly I only watched him from time to time when he was with Houston but he looks off balance and a little f***ing weird on every single swing. Like, hurt or something. Does he have a tiny bit of Hunter Pence in his swing and always has???

Yeah Ryu would still go down as a disaster. Had great first year but absolutely imploded in a do-or-die playoff game. Had to make that up with at least another solid season but choked hard down the stretch and was one of reasons we came up a game short year 2. If BJ Ryan goes down as a consensus bust, so would Ryu

Ryu was a 2.5 fWAR pitcher last year. He started 31 games. If he's not on the team they are mathematically eliminated a couple of days earlier.

The Ryan comp misses a bit. One good year on a five year deal is obviously worse than whatever the end result ends up being with Ryu. Even if Ryu limps to the finish with 1 WAR this year and next, he is a way better outcome than Ryan.

Well, there’s different levels of bust. The general principle would be same as BJ, but to the same level, no

Most accepted that Ryu would probably be s*** in year four. Just so happens that it might be year three. That’s the gamble you take when an extra year is required to get the deal done. I have no issues with that contract

To be most accurate, gotta say you got 1.5 years out of him. 5.50 ERA second half ERA too glaring to ignore

The Ryu book is not closed. Still plenty of time for him to get back to where he was in the 1st year of the contract. It does happen.

I would not be shocked if he returned to being a sub 3 ERA pitcher.

I would also not be shocked if he continues his current trend of diarrhea on the mound every 5th day.

Exactly. Pitchers regularly come back from the dead, or stay dead.

I would be interested in knowing the Jays front office people's opinions on Ryu. I guess his avg velocity is down literally one mph from the start of his career, but he was very effective in this velo range in 2020 and the first half of 2021. His velo actually went up a bit in the second half of 2021.

It must be something else with a physical cause... like decreased effectiveness on a key pitch.

The only thing that jumps off his statcast page to me is that his FB% is way up in 2022 and 2021 vs the few years prior.

35% 4 seamers this year and last

vs 24% to 31% the three previous years

Changeup use seems down. Is he having trouble executing an effective changeup?

Could that be caused by a sore arm? A lower half problem? Back problems?

Changeups are unique because they use a different full body musculature than all other pitches. The best changeup artists (of some varieties, not all) use little tricks like deadening their lower half --- so you get a body that is intentionally out of sync, sort of. I always kind of thought Marco Estrada's uber-elite changeup caused his back problems. I would imagine a guy whose body kind of contorts through the core and legs and almost fights against itself as the pitch is thrown.

I wonder if there is any analytics that the effectiness of a change of pace pitching is more affective with pitching faster then slower?

I would suspect pitching quicker would be far more affective.

That's an interesting correlation with the changeup and injury, but I think his command is the issue, prior to last August he had pinpoint command and continually worked ahead of batters, since then not so much. And he's been absolutely pounded, maybe he was a Spider Tack guy simply for better grip?

Ryu really didn't show a significant change in his spin rates after the sticky stuff crackdown. I have suspicions he was more of a sunscreen+rosin user instead of something like spider tack.

Yeah, something that helped his grip, essentially.

I recall the league was contemplating pre-tacked baseballs. There were tons of reports of AAA experimenting with these balls in the last week or two of the season in 2021 but I haven't been able to find any results for how the experiment turned out.

Yeah, I remember that.

Rockies fans must be laughing at this trade so far. Grichuk is on one of his famous heaters. If this were in Toronto the broadcasters would be raving how about he changed his approach this offseason and is more patient and not trying to do too much and making more contact.

It will be interesting to see when the cold streak starts and how long it lasts...but enjoy it while you can Colorado!

It always troubled me a little bit that the Dodgers wanted no part of keeping him at a seemingly reasonable 20M AAV at the time

That probably means something. Though it was probably just an unwillingness to commit to 4 years.

Their rotation was stacked at that point wasn’t it? Probably partly injury concerns and partly the term.

They finished the year in 2019 with a rotation of:

Ryu

Buehler

Kershaw

Maeda

Hill

Stripling was swing man of course and they were keeping him at that point

Urias was emerging as a probable front line starter

I guess they felt they didn't want to gamble on Ryu being healthy for 4 years

Probably yeah. They did win the WS in 2020 so I guess it was the right decision.
