There's a lot of concern that CF depth is hurt by this trade. Yeah the lottery ticket looks good. Yeah the lefty bat is fine, but CF depth is the cost. That being said, I think we can still come up with someone reasonable. Doesn't have to be a star.

Obviously there's a lot of variance in defensive stats, and Grich has played a lot more CF than Tapia in their respective careers, but it's not like we jettisoned prime Pillar fielding for late career Manny Ramirez fielding.

RG has demonstrated mlb upside Tapia doesn’t. Admittedly, while not out of the question, it’s unlikely he’ll get back to that over the course or a season idk. But he’s the better 4th OF. His main issue that drew the hate is what he made. Understandably so. That and he got too many ABs- but the same would be for any 4th OF with injuries.

I think if he made $5m, the jeers would’ve been less. We’ve seen some pretty awful 4th OF candidates in recent years that weren’t mlb material

I'd rather see Tapia in CF. Not a big believer in defensive stats. And I'm a numbers guy. My only real concern is that Springer is only about 75% of a full timer in CF.

They don't help with launch angle, which is quite clearly Tapia's biggest problem.

Money is basically a wash this year and next year they’ll save like 5M if they non tender Tapia.

 

I agree with you. This was a move to save whatever cost on Grichuk they could and to remove him from the bench in Toronto. I see zero upside in Tapia.

 

Let's hope Greg 'The Glass Man v 2.0' Bird stays in one piece and gives the Jays that left-handed thunder from the DH/1B role. And also Springer needs to stay healthy. At this point I would say Tapia is more like a 5th OFer and pinch runner with Biggio being 4th on the OF depth chart (or maybe Palacios?), but the problem is that neither of Gurriel or Hernandez have shown much at CF - although Hernandez did play a number of games there a couple years back, and it was not awful. He definitely has the wheels.

Like, you're mocking the mere possibility that a player with obvious physical skills could have a pretty good year at 28, even though they haven't put it all together before that. How do you reconcile that with the fact that we've seen that exact thing happen many times in the past?

 

I said, if you'll recall, that I could see a scenario where he was as valuable as Grichuk. This is not a high bar.
