Brantley apparently close to a deal with the Astros.

Edit:

Conforto and Profar still left on the market but options are dwindling.

That’s unfortunate. He would’ve been a really nice fit for us.

Michael Conforto or David Peralta might be the play now.

Peralta actually hits RHP very well. Would be alright as long as he’s strictly a platoon guy.

I feel Conforto will end up getting overpaid once he’s the best bat left on the market.

You have to think that spells the end of Bobby Dalbec's tenure in Boston. Fair value for Turner, but a curious fit.

They can option him.

They should probably explore a trade at this point. He's 27 and they clearly don't believe in him.

Peralta does make a lot of sense, especially since he's more likely to accept a platoon/non-everyday role than Conforto is, so the Jays would have a bit more flexibility with DH in that scenario (for Kirk, Springer, etc).

Most of the good free agents signed before Christmas. I don't remember a MLB free agency that went this quickly.

So he gets well less than half the $3M when you factor in auction fees. Gambled and lost, but I guess it's still ~ 1.2M that he didn't have before.

How could you turn down 3 million dollars for a baseball???

True, but it still looks good on him, lol.

How about Brandon Belt? Wouldn't be a bad fit in Toronto.

On a minor league deal, sure, but we already have a first baseman.

Justin Turner gets 15 million + incentives and a player option. The Dodgers turned down a 1/14 option for him. It's kind of puzzling that they wouldn't have just traded for him.

Is he just going to DH? Devers and Casas should be playing every day at the corners.

How much did Bond’s single season record ball sell for? Crazy to turn down 3M

That was my thought when he turned down $3 million. It is only the AL single season HR l record ball, not all time.

San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, who many, including Aaron Judge, consider to be the true home run king, hit his record-breaking 73rd homer in a season back on October 7, 2001. The Bonds ball sold at auction also to comic book creator Todd McFarlane for $517,500 in 2003.

So he turned down 6x the amount that BB’s record breaking home run ball brought.

He should’ve hired someone to make his decision for him. They wouldn’t have cost 1.5M

I guess so, but they really would have been better off keeping JD Martinez in that case.

It might depend what you think of Biggio as an outfileder and whether you'd put Belt in left field for 10 games (he's played 90 outfield career and played there as recently as 2019).

Belt could DH 60 games, 1b 40 games and outfield 10. Then you would have Biggio and Merrifield as the backup outfielder.

It also probably depends on whether you can trade a catcher. Otherwise with all 3 of them a catcher is taking up some DH time.

Belt just had major surgery

Will be 35 soon

Toronto does not need a 1B/DH

I wonder how many career homers Belt would have if he played in a home park that was just neutral for LH power.

It has always felt like playing for San Francisco was kind of the only thing keeping him from being thought of as a star.

His production (WAR) from 23 to 29 lines up closely with guys like Ryan Howard, Jason Giambi, Justin Morneau, Derrek Lee, Kevin Youkilis.

He has been an all star ONCE. But always has been such a sock solid hitter.
