Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 I think this is happening I'm very happy that it's 12 teams. Good on the players for sacrificing money to make baseball better.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Damn, looks like this might get done tonight. Please be so...
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Just realized that it's literally you updating this. You're doing god's work. Ive been refreshing all night. Hah, I didn't notice until you mentioned this, it's awesome.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Interesting. Apparently MLB is trying to get a deal with NBC and Apple for streaming games, which they're hoping to get 150M a year for (most of it from Apple). I believe Sportsnet has about 1/3 the subscribers, but subscriptions costs about three times the amount, as well as the fact that the audience is much more targeted. It's entirely possible that the broadcast rights for SN really is worth 100 to 150M a year to them. On another interesting note, I turned on the TV and reruns of "Married with Children" (how have the reruns not been socially blacklisted by now?) is playing the baseball strike episode lol.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 You misunderstood how that worked. Top 2 division winners in each league get a bye, so last year from the AL, Astros and Rays would have got the bye. The White sox (93 wins) would get a ghost win over Toronto (91 wins), Yanks would play Bosox I understood it correctly, I just assumed it was an option for both 12 and 14 team playoffs. My point still stands if the 2 seed gets a bye, the 7 doesn't make it. 6 still plays 3 and 3 shouldn't get a "ghost win" unless they are clearly superior to 6, which last year in the AL wouldn't have happened.

RobinThicc Verified Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 They'd better do something longer than one year on a deal. I imagine it would be longer than 1 year, my guess was that it would be 14 teams for just one year
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 If it ends up being 12 playoff teams then it means the players would have caved in other areas, so I’m actually surprised the players value 12 more than 14 so much that they’d potentially sacrifice other things. Either way, 12 would be better than 14 from a fan standpoint. If expansion happens again in the future, with 2 more franchises added, then 14 might be more desirable but with 30 teams, 12 is a nice compromise. Hope this gets done today and we can finally talk baseball again.

A 23% increase, not bad. A bonus pool 40 to 50 mil for pre arb players. No draft pick compensation. Massive win for the players. CBT going to 220 for 3 years and then 224 and 230 in the last year with the same tax levels as last deal. Only 3 teams have meaningfully spent over the luxury tax anyways. With Cohen owning the Mets there are 4 teams that will blow past the CBT levels the Yankees, Sox, Dodgers and Mets. Most teams won't come anywhere close. Super 2 looks like it's not changing. 12 team playoff. I'm sure I'm missing some things here.

Apparently MLB's offer is: 12 team playoffs (instead of 14) $675k min salary $25m pre arb pool $220m luxury tax ($220m for first 3 years then $224m in 2025 and $230m in 2026) CBT penalties same as last CBA Draft lottery for top 5 picks No draft pick compensation on free agents They still seem to be apart in all of the financial areas, but at least there was enough movement to extend the deadline. Just have to hope they find a compromise in the $$ today. According to Evan Drellich, the owners are asking for an international draft in these talks, so my guess is the players concede on that and some of the numbers (pre arb bonus, CBT, etc) increase.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Are FAs who have yet to sign losing the pick attached to them? Or is that starting next offseason?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Are FAs who have yet to sign losing the pick attached to them? Or is that starting next offseason? Next season, I'd assume. Simply because the off season FA had already started.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 This is live on MLB Network, by the way. That's if you want to listen to Harold all day...
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 This is live on MLB Network, by the way. That's if you want to listen to Harold all day... No thanks! I get just as good updates from following the posts on this board and Reddit links posted here. This occasional good content is what keeps me coming back to this dumpster fire board after nine years.
Stottlemyres_Bloody_Chin Verified Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 If they go with an international draft, and it started next year, I guess that means our handshake agreement with Bonilla for next year's international free agent class would mean nothing? We'd have to draft him?

We'd have to draft him? An international draft is bad for the Blue Jays, but probably good for baseball.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that MLB and the MLBPA have agreed to expand the number of playoff teams to 12 and to have similar luxury tax penalties as there were in the previous CBA. Nightengale adds that the penalty tiers would be 20 percent, 32 percent (up from 30) and 62.5 percent (up from 50). It's not clear what the first threshold will be, but Andy Martino of SNY.tv reported previously that it's likely to be beyond $225-230 million. If the two sides have indeed come together on the CBT and expanded postseason, it would appear a new CBA is imminent. Stay tuned. ----------------------------------- It's Bob Nightengale, but whatever. I'm curious of the details on the 12 team playoffs - but I do think 12 is the right number (40%)

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 They still haven't met yet??? According to Verducci. My bad, their all meeting now, finally.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Man this is an emotional roller coaster, c'mon...
jerb Verified Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Jon Heyman @JonHeyman MLB official said they thought they had a “path to a deal” last night when they extended the deal but that the union has struck a different note today. The official further stated thru league would make one final best offer and hope for the best. Things Obvs have turned south.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 I hope they are not going with that playoff ghost win ********. That is not fair competition. How about participation ribbons ffs. How stupid can they get.
jerb Verified Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Alex Wood @Awood45 FWIW MLB has pumped to the media last night & today that there’s momentum toward a deal. Now saying the players tone has changed. So if a deal isn’t done today it’s our fault. This isn’t a coincidence. We’ve had the same tone all along. We just want a fair deal/to play ball.
jerb Verified Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich MLBPA today offered to drop its request on the new prearbitration bonus pool to $85 million in the first year, w/a $5m increase annually over course of deal, source said. Union previously was at $115m. MLB has offered $25m. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich MLBPA’s most recent CBT proposal (MLB’s most recent in parenths for comparison): 2022: $238m (220) 2023: $244m (220) 2024: $250m (220) 2025: $256m (224) 2026: $263m (230) Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich On league minimum salary: MLBPA’s latest offer starts at $725,000, with increases of $20,000 in first few years of deal, a source said, then a different increase later. MLB has offered $675,000 with $10,000 increases (the offer made yesterday)
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Owners are really sticking to their CBT ceilings, offer concessions on bonus pool and min salary. Enough for the PA to accept??? Seems like a pretty good result from a minimum salary POV compared to previous and along with 30 million bonus pool... not a huge win, but a win. CBT moves up, but not a lot.
