If you want to sign another pitcher what is the list of realistic targets?

- Rodon

- Duffy

- Kikuchi

- Kim

- Bundy

- Wood

Dead-Cat Bounce Old Guys;

- Greinke

- Paxton

- Hamels

Certainly enough options (and prob more than I listed) that we could find someone good, or someone we can throw into the Pearson/Stripr pile and see who steps up.

I'd like to see if Walker could do anything with Carlos Martinez

I think they sign a versatile, decent guy who can cover 2B/3B, but is mostly on the bench. They'll use Biggio at 2B and Espinal at 3B until one of their internal options pushes Espinal to the bench role he was designed for.

Basically, I think they're going to try to upgrade on Valera for the bench piece, not on Biggio or Espinal.

Espinal, the big surprise this coming season, put your money on it.:o

Was looking at his stats yesterday and my jaw hit the floor when I saw he was worth 2.5 war in just over 200AB. Gotta be that glove. I’d love to put him over at second if it means Bryant signs with us. Protects bichette in that infield too

He could be a huge part of this team even if we sign Bryant or Taylor. He can platoon with Biggio or he can give us the flexibility to package biggio and be an everyday guy till Moreno comes up. He is a great piece to have.

Unless he develops power outta nowhere he's never going to be a guy you want as your everyday 3B, but he's an excellent defender, not totally embarrassing with the bat typically, and cheap.

Agreed. Guy gives us a lot of options with regards to other moves

A 3rd base option not really getting any thought even though he's left handed and comes at zero cost is Kevin Smith (at least at the start of the season). It would also free-up Espinal to play other positions as the utility player. Plus, if he does perform well in the MLB its will just increase his trade value if they F.O. wants to upgrade his trade value or frees up other assets.

Kevin Smith bats right handed and it would be really odd to pencil him in as the starter so you can push Espinal to utility player. Chris Taylor really is a perfect fit as he won't require a 5-6 year deal, or a massive AAV and he could move to 2nd/OF if Moreno sets the world a-blaze and takes over as our starting 3rd baseman.

What has Smith shown to get the starting nod over Espinal at 3B? Espinal starts over him easily but preferably I would want Espinal to be our backup utility IF and platoon with Biggio at 2B.

If you are just worried about third base defence then there really isn't that much reason to switch from Espinal to Chapman as Espinal is a plus plus defender at third base as well. Maybe not quite in Chapman's league but Chapman is basically in a league all his own.

The point of getting Chapman would be to add depth. In this scenario you would have Chapman AND Espinal backing him up, unless he (or Biggio) went the other way in a trade.

I've been seeing some Freddie Freeman rumors on Reddit from a guy who broke some Jays news in the past.

That would be interesting to say the least. Guessing they would be banking on Vlad's offseason work and putting him at 3B.

I expect the team will hold tight on adding an infielder expecting that two of Espinal, Biggio, Smith, and Moreno will produce at or above replacement level but will look to add a good lefthanded outfielder/DH. Their production out of DH was pretty poor last year and another year of Grichuk playing every day will make me very sad.

The team should still have the budget to add later if need be, like Atlanta did.

It probably won't happen but I just saw on MLBTR that the Rays are listening on Joey Wendle. He plays a few positions and has a little bit of pop. He has two more years left so he could bridge the gap until one of the young guys can step in.

Matt Duffy projects for a higher wRC+ and is a FA that could be had for very little.

Sorry yes, I knew Smith is a RH bat but s*** happens. My point still stands on the Jays playing him st 3rd as an option.

Duffy has played full time one year in the past three. Projects are great but if you're injured half the season I don't care about those numbers.

Regardless of trading for Wendle vs. just signing Duffy, Jays already have comparable players in Biggio and Espinal. For me, unless they are getting a Bryant, a JD, or a Chapman, or a J-Ram, they are better off betting on Moreno.

I think you're grasping at straws man. The reason nobody brought up Smith playing 3rd is because that's a terrible option. That must be like the 8th best contingency fall back option for the FO. And I mean that will all due respect - I'd love to see Kevin Smith become a full time player, but we don't have the luxury of that being our first option given our place on the win cycle.

Kevin Smith is a Buffalo based injury fill-in. If he gets the call due to injury and performs well (> Espinal or whoever), that's the only way he ends up getting regular reps on this team.

i think kris bryant is good, also if possible we need to get chris taylor. we need some utility player

Espinal is already Chris Taylor. Doesn't have the power, but is far better defensively.

We can't. We already wasted out money on a pitcher who can't get wins

They're nothing alike... Espinal has just north of 300 PA's... Chris Taylor >>>>> Santiago Espinal. Defense is definitely on point, though.

Oh yeah Taylor is lightyears better with the bat, but defensive versatility is only so valuable if he's not good at the defense part. Taylor really isn't good at defense. You can put him in many places to be below average sure.

Quite honestly, the Jays have enough defensive versatility with regards to guys capable of playing multiple positions, they just need the guys to be better defensively at the positions they get put in.

I'm not a fan of defensive metrics, I know it's the best we have, I just think their flawed.

Between DRS, OAA and UZR I think that we have enough different metrics available to get a decently accurate judgment on player defence.

Yeah, I mean I use them. Yet, I've noticed they fluctuate too much for me from year to year, not a fan.

4 straight years of negative D value from Taylor though... he had 1 good year prior to that.

Should also be mentioned that he has very little experience at 3b overall, like 189 innings.
