Are there any real examples though of someone playing C and a position other than 1b though? Like , I know it would be great but when is the last time it actually happened?

Willians Astudillo of the Twins, not a great example but I think he did switch from 3rd to C throughout the season

Varsho and Kiner-Falefa

Craig Biggio and BJ Surhoff too going way back. The arrangement doesn't seem to last very long.

Current examples would be Varsho (CF), Alfaro (OF), Haase (OF), Astudillo (3B)

Russel Martin played 57 games at 3B, Austin Hedges has played about 20% of his games at 2B.

Yan Gomes played several positions early on too.

If Vlad sucks at third you have Freeman/Vlad locked into 1B/DH for the life of Freeman’s contract which I think sounds terrible

Freddie is a decent baserunner though. There's worse thing than having a dedicated DH that will be a 35% to 50% better than league average hitter from the left side that doesn't clog up the bases. I guess it comes down to contract though and length. If you could get it done for 5 years and avoid that 6th it's definitely intriguing.

Does signing Freeman impact what we're able to do with Vladdy and/or Bo from an extension standpoint? Feels like we'd have a lot of hefty contracts already committed.

Does Teoscar get moved?

Yeah I could live with 3 AS years for this window and then a couple meh ones. Wouldn’t be a fan of 6

Ya but it nukes all lineup flexibility. George Springer is gonna have to DH at least 30 games a year.

Freeman is a nice dream, but the only way he makes sense for the Jays is if they decide to go full Yankees payroll. Freeman contract plus a supposed extension to Vlad is locking up $500 million to the 1B/DH slot.

Yes but he was replying to my post where I said if Vlad sucks at third

I don’t see how signing FF makes sense financially or from a roster construction point of view

ah yes - poor skim reading on my part. I don't disagree with you at all. I think people are open to the idea because he's left handed and is f***ing amazing. I generally agree with you. Springer won't play CF much longer, plus we have Kirk, Moreno, etc. to eat up AB's at DH. I think CF is the one position we're going to need to address soon (as silly as that sounds following the Springer signing). I think we'll soon see Teo in LF, with Springer in RF...not sure what will happen with Gurriel - I think he gets lost in the mix myself. Ketal Marte continues to be the right fit for me personally.

I agree with everything you said. If Freeman played literally any position other than first it would be a no brainer.

Not often we agree - but we're rowing in the same direction on this one.

You don't even need to commit to Vlad full-time at 3B.

Just sign Freeman, and try Vlad there until one of Moreno/Smith/Groshans/Martinez pushes him off.

Then you can deal with the 1B/DH rotation with Freeman and him.

I just can't see the Jays being willing to hand out the type of money and term Freeman is reportedly looking for. They refused to pay similar money to Semien who is younger, provides more impact on the field and would be filling an actual position of need.

Paying Freeman seems like a lot safer bet than paying Semien

Freeman is potentially a few years away from being a full time DH. I think on a similar contract Semien would almost certainly provide far better value given how much better rounded he is.

We all seem to be on the same page now, but I figured I would beat the dead horse. If the Jays had Ozzie Smith at short I'd say sure go ahead and try it. But Bichette is already...not great at SS. Do you really want to roll the dice on Guerrero that weight loss will lead to an improvement from atrocious 3B defense to average?

A Guerrero-Bichette-Biggio-Freeman combo is probably the worst infield defense in the league. That's putting a ton of pressure on pitching staff. I think the starters can handle it but do you really want to repeat the 2021 bullpen experience?

Yep. Espinal at 3B, Semien at 2B made a heck of a difference in 2021.

Maybe they pivot and sign Correa, all while driving up the price on Freeman. Muahahaha... :P

He wants more money than Seager got, lol.

The Rays trade players the moment they make more than the league minimum, but sure, they made a play for Freeman.

They are calling to Ratify the deal at 6 so tonight into tomorrow is going to be fire.

I'd be moderately surprised if teams haven't been negotiating with agents during the lockout. There could be a flurry of deals immediately after the deadline.
