Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 I think the front office wanted to put a contending team on the field in 2021 but didn't anticipate how good certain players would be: Expected Vladdy to be good not necessarily great this fast. Expected Semien to be somewhere between his 2019 and 2020 performances. He was other worldly. Expected Bo to continue to develop but not necessarily all star caliber in 2021. Expected Ray to be Ray not Cy Young. They were hopeful Teo could turn into what he is but over a full season who knows? They expected Springer to play a lot more games than he did. Covid f***ed up our schedule, 3 different home fields. I think we give Shatkins a pass on all that. Montoyo I don't give them a pass on.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Hope the near misses (playoffs, 50 hr, probably MVP) keep Vlad motivated. I hope so also. He was motivated last offseason and lost some weight. He had stretches late this season where it looked like he was running on fumes a bit, so hopefully he realizes another 20 pounds+ this offseason would do him even more good. a 10 WAR Trout-like season isn't unattainable if he puts in the work. It shouldbnt be expected, but it's attainable.

Pujols peak seasons where he was playing 1B about as well as you could hope for he was mostly at 8-9 WAR and came close to but didn't hit 10 WAR. Cabrera and Votta didn't hit that either.

Yeah playing a good CF like Trout does and stealing bases helps with the WAR Vladdy can't touch that

I recall reading an interview with Vladdy's Dominican trainer in which he stated that they intended to hit things just as hard this offseason as they did last year. I think another key would be baking in a few more rest days for Vlad as the season progresses to keep him fresh. Perhaps he can eventually get himself into the type of condition which will allow him to play every day without fatigue setting in but it was apparent that he's not quite there yet at this point of his career.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 That's bull. There are some B type prospects we could have moved for pen arms, McGuire could have been involved also. You are missing the point here. The Rays had to move a player who ended up putting up 3.8 FWAR in 99 games (that's a six win pace over an entire season) after being traded in order to swing an early trade for impact relievers. A guy like McGuire who would have had zero trade value at the time (remember that teams could have had him for free off of waivers before the season started) wouldn't have brought back the type of arms which could have made much of a difference at that point.

Just found a quote from Vlad, yesterday after they saw they were out: “It hurts. Knowing that you win 91 games and you didn’t make the playoffs, it really hurts me, hurts all my teammates,” Guerrero said. “Like I said before, that’s just gonna make me stronger. [i’ll] come back next year even better than this year.”

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Not seen it mentioned anywhere else yet, but how did the strength of the Jays schedule work out in the end compared to others? The Blue Jays played more games against teams above .500 than anyone else in the league. 1 more than the Yankees did, and 2 more than the Rays did.
