Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Over / Under on Higashioka hitting (another) big home run against us tonight? It seems like he saves them all for us.

bronson44 Verified Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Going to keep a close eye on Cole tonight. I have a feeling he went back to using sticky stuff again but just found a more clever way to hide it. Looks like umps just do a cursory look at the hat, glove and belt.

Let's see if he tips anything.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Yup.. Let's see if he tips anything. I've been seeing a lot of pitchers with longish hair rubbing the back of their necks recently.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 I've been seeing a lot of pitchers with longish hair rubbing the back of their necks recently. I noticed that as well... I wonder if they are rubbing it into their hair and once they sweat you can play it off as pushing your hair back etc.

Aren't they also supposed to be randomly checking the baseballs also?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Aren't they also supposed to be randomly checking the baseballs also? That's only for the teams without Yankees in their name. Seriously though, if the Jays notice something, this is the time of the season to call it.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Came to the game bc think Matz is going to deal for some reason. Need to scrape a few from Cole. Hoping Vlad goes deep
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 I hope we have a lot of scrappy at bats vs Cole and get to their pen by the seventh. Here's hoping..

It's possible to inspect spin rates over time using Baseball Savant. On Cole's Statcast pitching info page there is a pulldown that shows pitch % by season. You can adjust this to show average spin rate and then sort it by game and select just the 2021 season for a clear picture. Cole has seen his spin rates recover a bit over the last while after really crashing hard in June, but they aren't back to the point where they were early in the season.

I don't suspect he went back to full spider tack but a watered down version so that makes sense. It could be because he keeps it in a place where there's more sweat (neck) or he's using a reduced version somewhere that might be less noticeable. I know I sound paranoid but this guy is the poster child for sticky substances so I'm not buying in to him just cratering and then just figuring it out naturally

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Lamb just said the Jays have a quility bullpen.... uh...
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2021 Author Posted September 7, 2021 Come on, Jays offense. Let's win Robbie Ray a Cy Young award by taking Gerrit Cole out of the running today.
infinitebook Verified Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Cole just spit on himself

Buster Verified Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 Did Cole say screw this, and got back on the sticky sauce?
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 If the Jays pull this it would be gravy. Expecting an L.
