Am I the only one who thinks the whole homerun jacket thing is incredibly cringey?

[TheHurl]

Is there anything real to this, or is it just statistical noise?

The only way it would be real is if one believes in "clutch". And that the Jays young hitters tighten up in the late innings, the anti-clutch. Buck and Pat will tell us clutch is a thing.....

It's obvious. They have 3 really good fastball hitters, 2 average ones and the rest are horrible against top velocity. Once they see the pen they are at a disadvantage.

This year vs. Power pitchers

Team .645 OPS in 1100 plate appearances

Springer .511 OPS (really small SS, for his career he is one of the best against power pitchers)

Semien .789 OPS

Bichette .659 OPS

Vladdy .892 OPS

Teo .716 OPS

Lourdes .506 OPS

Grichuck .615 OPS

Biggio .552 OPS

By Comp Boston .682, NYY .711, TB .739

[Brownie19]

So Grichuk is better v. power pitchers than he is v. others?

Where is Kirk? Isn't he our high velocity weapon?

Great insight. I figured it had to do with us facing so many good arms in late innings vs Tampa/Boston/NYY, and this helps explain exactly WHY

[Spanky__99]

A run scored is a run scored - regardless of what inning it is.

No kidding Brownie, with our pen performance it becomes a clusterf*** late in games is what I'm getting at. Our offense is still 5th in MLB.

Pen is always the first thing that comes to mind when I wonder at this year's results to date. I also seem to remember SP length also being a huge problem in the first half. I remember feeling relieved during Ryu starts because you could reasonably hope for 6IP. I've never looked at the numbers to see if that was better or worse than other teams' SPs, but it felt pretty dire for the first few months. To the point that I would never feel safe watching even a four or five run lead, and I've watched ball for decades to know how unlikely huge comebacks tend to be.

Grichuk for his career is considerably better against "finesse pitchers" than "power pitchers" (as are most batters though)

All of these samples are small but Kirk is just 28 PA's where he just just 1 XBH on 7 hits. Also this doesn't necessarily always mean they are going to see high velocity fastballs from a "power pitcher".

This site is very good at just looking at runs scored and when teams are doing it. If you click more stats and "other" you will see some options. The full season pitcher for the Jays doesn't show the late inning pitching as the biggest issue. The lack of a true set up guy would likely be the biggest issue as the 8th is the only inning we are in the bottom half of the rankings.

The Pad's have their swag chain, other teams haves silly hats and it's all kind of fun and a form of team camaraderie. And the Jays have a... winter jacket?

It feels forced. Especially now that the player has to stop before the dugout as Charlie slowly and carefully applies the jacket. It's just not a very exciting thing to watch. It would be one thing if it was some kind of cool, over the top jacket like a fur-coat or some studded jacket or some s***, but it's literally just a plain ugly blue winter jacket with country names scrawled across it.

Padre fans LOVE the swag chain and they sell em and it's a piece of team lore now, but I don't think I've ever even heard a Jays fan talk about the jacket. Is there some kind of lore to the jacket or back story that I'm unaware of? What's the appeal of this ridiculous process? The jacket's a lame idea. Can they put it to rest already?

I agree,Totally cringeworthy.

[Ryu In My House]

I like the jacket, but retire it after 2021 please.

[JaysAllMighty]

Auction it and donate the money to Sick Kids.

[Jonn]

Who f***ing cares lol. Its a team bonding thing. A lot of teams have something. And nobody on the team cares what you think.

This.

[5ToolPhenom]

It's a suit jacket and it's also a nod to the internationality of the team. I don't mind it at all.

I don't know how I missed this. I'm not a fashion guy at all so it flew over my head. Watching it on TV I always thought it was a thicker winter type jacket, but after reading the replies on here I made a point to focus in on it and yeah, I was definitely out to lunch haha. Also, I guess I haven't been watching as many Jays games this year as I usually would as I treated myself to MLB TV and I've been watching a lot of other games around the league.

[5ToolPhenom]

One thing though, Isn't it supposed to be a jacket with all the countries of the Jays players? I saw Brazil, Panama ETC on there and as far as I know we don't have any players from there do we?

Might have been traded or released since the jacket became a thing?

[Abomination]

Probably a coach or trainer.

[InvincibleTiger]

Who cares. If the team is winning, who gives a crap.

[Bluebombers]

Give the jacket to the team leader in homers at seasons end

Which hopefully is us winning it all

[wilko]

They should burn the jacket and inhale the smoke from the fire. That's the only way to obtain it's powers.

[Plat]

Yes, yes you are...your thread is incredibly cringey though

[Plat]

How on earth do you think that its a winter jacket... lol

Right? lmfao this dude has never worn a winter jacket or a suit in his life or something?

[jimedmonds]

I think the jacket has been way overdone lately and hope that it continues

[Willy the Fan]

They're having fun. The youing Jays are the Bad News Bears. Let them PLAY!

[Pendleton]

If they were going to use a suit jacket, they could have went with the Canadian tuxedo

[John_Havok]

Other ideas instead of a HR jacket:

A HR hat. Could be huge cowboy hat like in Dumb and Dumber.

A HR chain with a pair of baseballs and a bat dangling from it.

A HR piñata… knock one out of the park? Then take a swing at the piñata in the dugout with a smaller novelty bat.

Anyone else?

[DigitalRock]

Lol no fun allowed, someone got a stick up their ass...no by you are the only human on the planet....

[DigitalRock]

Ironically, cringey describes this very thread.

FTFY; Who cares, it's for them.

I was being serious. I like the Jacket, but think it should be something they can change up maybe next year to something different.
