If we had gone out and got Kimbrel instead of Hand we would probably be in a playoff spot right now. Or at least much closer.

Now, I don’t know what the cost would have been but I would have rather done Adams + for him instead.

What's the jays equivalent of Nick Madrigal? Cubs would have probably asked for like Kirk or Manoah or something to pass up on the CWS offer.

Nope but it does mean that he's a surplus asset that should probably be moved. He probably wouldn't have lasted through the offseason anyway due to 40-man roster concerns. So he had to go they just got the wrong guy in return.

I agree. He had to be moved but not for a extremely spotty reliever for 2 months.

Chisox paying $32mm/year for 2 pen arms. 19 and 20 Kimbrel struggled. Building a pen is tough. So volatile. At the other end of the spectrum Underinvest, bargain bin shop in the slightly damaged aisle, and have some bad luck = the 2021 Jays.

It's not a great trade but "worst trade in franchise history"? Lol. That take tastes like I just gave you a Rusty Trombone.

Read my other replies. If Adams is even a solid platoon guy or 2nd div starter this trade will be horrible. If he becomes anything more like a Zunino...

Not to mention they get him for 6 f***ing years.

Reminds me of the scene in Moneyball where he tells Art Howe he can't play Pena at 1st anymore.

I was thinking that exact same thing! lol But part of me figures this may have been what happened to Hand.

My offseason posts about teams missing the boat when Hand cleared waivers were very stupid.

I don't think so. Before the crackdown, he was pretty solid. I think he suffered a lot from not being able to use foreign substances.

I think the crackdown basically broke Chatwood as well. MLB really needs to avoid s*** like this in the future, it's just so bush league to ignore a growing obvious issue like this for years and then to change the rules in the middle of the season with no alteenative grip agent to fall back on.

Your way too bearish on Adams.

And I said chance. Didnt declare it the worst in franchise history already.

I think we lost $400M in value over 5 years in the Marlins trade. Adams has to turn into Johnny Bench to match that. Riley Adams will probably never increase his WAR total from where it is now.

Lol no f***ing way. Surprised they actually did. Terrible trade from the moment it happened, Hand’s peripherals this year were f***ing awful. Waste of decent prospect.

At least they owned it and dumped him, sucks though.

The Mets claimed Hand off waivers. Does that mean we save on a months worth of his salary? Edited by Jays24

Yeah but I think his 2021 salary was already being covered by Washington

Lesson learned here is actually trade for a good reliever.

Pretty much. Not one who is having a bad year and is on an expiring contract. Such a horrible move that reeked of desperation.

That's because they were, desperate. Everyone here was desperate, lol.

Guy was the 4th best reliever in baseball in the covid shortened 2020 season. And someone pointed out what Kimbrel's price was. Building pens is tough...trading for them is even more difficult.

Doesn't really matter with relievers, Hand was s*** THIS year. Just look at Ryan Tepera for another example of reliever volatility. Or... Aaron Loup

They shouldn't have traded for Hand.

He wasn't s***, he was just mediocre with Washington. Still an above average reliever so it was more than reasonable to assume he would be able to help Toronto. And his velocity was even up which was kind of interesting.

Didn't we wind up on the hook for 5-6M in the Hand deal?

No, they swallowed it for, Adams. Oops you sir are correct as I can't find any money coming this way, I guess the Jays save money on the claim, at least that's good news. :P

$6,975,000 was already off his $10.5M contract. Now the Mets are paying his last $1.92M

volatility on relievers isn't an annual thing. How many times have we seen relievers be s*** for a month and then pitch lights out. I mean Romano's July was as bad as Hand's August.

If Hand went to the Mets and pitched well...that's when I'd say "that's relievers for ya"

I'm okay with this deal. In hindsight we should have traded Adams for some other mediocre reliever, but we rolled the dice on Hand. We can't be carrying 5 catchers on the 40-man roster, and he was blocked at the major league level. He'd be 4th on the depth chart. Atleast we got a lottery ticket RP for him for the stretch run, the process was solid but the outcome wasn't favourable. Good chance we would have lost him this offseason for nothing.

Disagree

Are you disagreeing that relievers can't be volatile within the season? If so, have to not seen Kimbrel's stats? In case you haven't let me break his season out for you.

Cubs - 39 games. 0.49 ERA. Allowed ERs in 2 of those games. 1ER and 1ER.

Whitesox - 13 games. 6.57 ERA. Allowed ERs in 5 of those games. 3ER, 3ER, 1ER, 1ER, 1ER.

Happens when they don't even switch teams. Devin Williams. He was 2nd ranked RP in WAR last year. First 22 games this year he had a 4.22 ERA, looked lost at times. Over the 31 games since those first 22 he's had a 0.31ERA.
