He is pretty much fluent. Just doesn't want to speak it publicly

He and Tatis Jr very different in this regard.

Vladdy really needs to work on his English (or at least have the confidence in it to speak it).

Really needs some english if he's going to be the face of baseball.

You guys are mocking Stephen A Smith right?

I can't for the life of me understand why it matters if an athlete speaks English. I don't want to see their interviews, anyway.

It's all fun and games but man, if that had hit him, we'd be having a very different conversation today.

Yeah, seriously, that could have been fatal.

Yeah I never understood why people care if an athlete can or can't speak english. I think I read that the HR derby got over 7 million viewers on ESPN, and it was a show built around a Japanese player who can't speak english (well). Fans don't (and shouldn't) care.

As far as "the face of baseball", it's going to be Tatis regardless of how good Ohtani and Vlad are. Tatis is super charismatic and looks cool doing just about anything. That's going to play better to the younger audiences and sponsors.

And Tatis speaks English fluently, which is why he’s featured in so many commercials and stuff. Being able to speak English obviously affects marketability potential in the US/Canada but other than that it doesn’t matter much.

Tatis is featured in so many commercials and stuff because he had his breakout two years earlier than Vlad and Ohtani. He's an established star in the game.

Ohtani is already surpassing his presence in MLB marketing materials and if Vladdy never does it will be because he plays for a Canadian team, not because he isn't fluent in English.

Not true man, Vlad was front and centre in their marketing and Vlad is really marketable, he has personality, you are way off here lol, it won't be just one player it will be a few faces of baseball. He was leading vote getter for the Allstar game...

If you're talking about US endorsements, then yes, having someone who speaks english would be beneficial, although I suspect Ohtani is going to get more endorsements in the coming months given how much hype there has been around him, so it may not matter. As mentioned, MLB is starting to build their marketing around him now. Vlad will suffer because he plays in Canada, so his reach in the US might be impacted by that, not his lack of fluency in english.

Yep. Hopefully Tatis can get his confidence up to speak more. In a year or 2 maybe

LMFAO, funny

I'm not sure Tatis ever stops talking...

2021 MLB All-Star Game - 8.9 M viewers

2021 NBA All-Star Game - 5.9 M viewers

Not surprised at all with that, the players themselves didn't want to be at the NBA ASG so the ratings being like that makes sense.

I wonder how this Home run Derby did vs other years though? I imagine 2019 was great because of Vladdy, but Shohei could have brought a ton of viewers to this one!

MLB is auctioning off jerseys from the AS Game for Charity. Current bids:

FTJ - $2,500

Vladdy - $2,000

Justin Turner - $990

Soto - $910

Judge - $860

Ohtani - $111,000
