Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Loving these late-night Callis bombs. Could a 12th round pick sound any more interesting?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 I'm sure someone's done this, but where do we sit with all these signings? are we under/over the slot amount? I mean it certainly looks like we're signing everyone except Holman at this point doesn't it?
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Not the Jays, but a big one. The Pirates saved $2M on #1 pick Henry Davis. This is where half of that went: Pirates seem v smart this draft. In hindsight the Henry Davis play was obvious but they still nailed it. Huge savings allocated down draft

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Check the first post in this thread yikes - I did and still missed all that information. I'm dumn.

Cooke already has "Toronto Blue Jays Organization" in his Twitter bio so I imagine that he's been signed but it probably hasn't been "officially" announced yet. There are obviously still other draftees from a 11th to 20th rounds that haven't been signed/announced yet either.

This is where half of that went: I thought it was interesting that the Jays were supposedly all over Solometo, and then he ultimately went to the Pirates with Cherington/Sanders. I imagine there's probably some cross-evaluation that happened there given that the scouting departments of those two teams are "related".

Looks like we are unless Ricky wants a ton of cash.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Author Posted July 20, 2021 The Jays signed 10th rounder Connor Cooke for $141,900. Slot for Cooke was $144,400 so they only saved $2,500. They also signed 18th rounder Jimmy Burnette for $50,000.
metafour Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 The Jays signed 10th rounder Connor Cooke for $141,900. Where are you seeing this? I haven't seen any Tweets from Callis, Mayo, or Collazo.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Author Posted July 20, 2021 With only $33K in excess available, Holman is guaranteed to go off to college. And if Tiedemann comes in at or around slot, they have essentially nothing left to go over on the remaining 11-20 guys. Hoping they're still able to lock in Bucknam and Palmegiani with the $125K allowances at those picks.

I'm assuming Collazo just hasn't tweeted it yet but he has the info. It's in the Baseball America draft database. Same place I learned of Spain and Svanson's bonuses early. https://www.baseballamerica.com/draft-history/mlb-draft-database/#/?Year=2021&Round=0&TeamId=1022&Position=&SchoolName=&FourYearSchoolType=false&JuniorCollegeType=false&HighSchoolType=false&OtherSchoolType=false&StateOrCountry=&Signed=&SigningBonusMin=0&SigningBonusMax=0&PlayerName=&OverallNumber=0

metafour Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 The official Tweet from Callis just came through:
Ray Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Might be tight to be able to sign all of Micah Bucknam, Ricky Tiedemenn, and Damiano Palmegiani with the remaining slot money.
metafour Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Might be tight to be able to sign all of Micah Bucknam, Ricky Tiedemenn, and Damiano Palmegiani with the remaining slot money. It'll be tight, but I think they get done, just because this regime has been extremely proficient in draft-budgeting. With regards to Palmegiani: he's committed to Arizona, but their HC just left to take the LSU job.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 s*** - getting Ricky under slot it huge. Let's land Micah Bucknam and Damiano Palmegiani now boys.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 That amount for Tiedemann is such a small and specific number under slot. It makes you think they already have it all mapped out.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 Has there ever been any real discussion on adopting the NBA system where HS players must attend College for at least a year or two before making themselves eligible for the draft and then eliminating the bonus pool idea so teams just draft based on talent and not money? Do we think that would be an improvement? Or do we like the current system?
Ehjays Verified Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 s*** - getting Ricky under slot it huge. Let's land Micah Bucknam and Damiano Palmegiani now boys. This is the second time they have drafted Damiano Palmegiani so Im pretty sure he will be signed.
Benito Verified Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 This is the second time they have drafted Damiano Palmegiani so Im pretty sure he will be signed. That's right. I forgot someone had mentioned that in the draft day thread. The rule (which I didn't know) is that you can't draft a player twice without first getting their permission. Would be shocking based on that, if he didn't sign.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 This is the second time they have drafted Damiano Palmegiani so Im pretty sure he will be signed. Like Jake Eliopoulos?
Ehjays Verified Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 Like Jake Eliopoulos? Yeah he was drafted 3 different times and didnt sign lol Sad story, and I think in the end he killed himself.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 Yeah he was drafted 3 different times and didnt sign lol Sad story, and I think in the end he killed himself. Yeah, he had demons. Really sad.
InvincibleTiger Verified Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 So will any of these guys actually get any playing time this year or shut down?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 So will any of these guys actually get any playing time this year or shut down? I'm guessing a couple/few of them might get a cup of coffee...although, with the draft being much later than usual, I wouldn't be surprised if they just have them at Extended Spring and leave the games for next year.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2021 Author Posted July 21, 2021 Good news: The Jays locked in their second youngest draft pick remaining. Juan Gonzalez for $100,000.
