Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Author Posted June 21, 2021 John Axford has agreed to a deal with the #BlueJays, pending a physical per @SNETCampbell. Axford was touching 98 with Team Canada at the Olympic qualifier two weeks ago, and was a Jays TV analyst before that. Quite the career shift
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 You know s***'s dire when you're signing bullpen help from your broadcast team. He ain't much of a broadcaster though, so hopefully he can squeeze out another minimum contract or two.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 Can't be any worse than what we've been trotting out there. People keep wanting Atkins to do something. This is what doing something looks like in mid-June.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 Hopefully the bullpen curse doesn't hit Axford like the rest of the Jays relievers. The way the year has unfolded he'll likely throw something like two innings and blow out his ulnar collateral ligament.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 Siddall the next man up if McGuire or Adams get hurt. The omission of Buck Martinez in this scenario is sheer madness.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 The omission of Buck Martinez in this scenario is sheer madness. Imagine how great it would be to make Buck eat his words when it comes to catchers catching on a single knee. Although at his age it would be lucky if he can even get into any kind of crouch.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 I had a feeling this was going to happen. After throwing 96-98 at the Olympic qualifiers, it wouldn't hurt.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 But why Apparently he looked pretty good in the Olympic qualifiers? Idk, I didn't watch and I haven't looked at the numbers. But Abom is right, they need help and unfortunately this is what help looks like in June. Between Carl's Jr, Barnes and now Axford, at least people can't say they aren't trying.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 LOL Jesus I do not think Ross Atkins is who you think he is
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 John Axford is 38 years old. He last pitched in 2018, to a 5.27 ERA. The year before he had an ERA over 6.00. He's not helping the MLB team. I'm hoping this is 95% a favour to Axford and he will go to Buffalo. Maybe he really wanted one more shot so they said fine.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 I assume this is a minor league deal.

He had a 4.02 FIP with the Jays in 51 innings in 45 appearances. He gave up 0 runs in 31 of those appearances, 1 run in 7 of those appearances and more than one run 7 times. When I heard of the signing, I first thought who are we possibly going to replace? Then I realized there were several guys in the bullpen who I would get rid of to get those type of numbers. He still throws 98, we're bridging to the trade deadline. Why not have a look? My first choice would have been Osuna, but I'm the forgiving type, most aren't. There really aren't a whole lot of options. We could do worse than a veteran presence with a great beard who throws 98. Maybe we get lucky for a month.

And once he gets into a a routine of pitching, that fastball is probably more like 94, scraping 98 once a week. f***, 98 doesn't even matter anymore. Half of our scrub relievers are touching 97/98.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 I heard John Axford was hitting 102 at the team Canada Olympic qualifier. Buck was catching him.
Buster Verified Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 This is to backfill a AAA call up I assume

The bigger problem is that Axford could never f***ing throw strikes even when he was briefly effective. Best possible outcome here is another Dolis.
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 Why are people s***ing on this lmao its a minor league contract. If he looks like crap at AAA then he gets cut and if he looks good he gets a shot. And he was actually solid for us when he last pitched. Had a 3.4 xERA in 51 innings. That isnt anything to laugh at. If he actually is 94-98 its worth a shot. Read that hes been working in a pitching "lab" too.
Scion Verified Member Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 But why Why not? The Jays are also said to have had interest in David Robertson who also apparently performed well at the Olympic Qualifiers. No idea if this signing means they are out on Robertson now though.

I feel like his name recognition is going to lead to an undeserved promotion, and there will be a very minor opportunity cost to that. Not a big deal.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 21, 2021 Posted June 21, 2021 I believe I mentioned during the qualifiers that he looked good. He also gave up the hit that eliminated Canada so he will feel at home. Videos are still up of the games if you wish to watch
