That's the frustrating part. It's understandable if no good candidate wanted this job after 2018 considering the Jays were heading into a tank season, so hiring a deer-in-headlights minor league manager to soak up losses during a rebuild made sense. But if the Jays job became open today, the candidate pool would be a lot better because the team situation is a lot better. Having Buntoyo manage this roster just seems like a huge waste.

He was not really extended. They just guarenteed his contract next year not to make him a lame duck manager. They did the same thing with John Gibbons. He absolutely still could get fired and honestly those conversations should be happening now. Manager of the year means nothing. We snuck into the gimmick post season in less than half a season. Mickey Mouse season is you will. It doesn’t mean anything.

The key is to fire Buntoyo before expanded playoffs becomes a thing. Once that happens, the Jays will probably begin a string of playoff appearances given how many teams Manfred wants in (7 in each league). Fire Charlie this season (after or during), hire an actual MLB level candidate for 2022-beyond, and go from there.
