EastCoaster Verified Member Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Right now the worst players at the plate for the Blue Jays are Rowdy Tellez and Danny Jansen hands down sorry but these guys are simply not cutting it this season. Right now I rather see anybody other than those 2 coming up to bat as you know very well it going to end whatever little offense the rest happened to managed in the inning.

Since the start of the Yankees series, Tellez is batting .282 with a 99 wRC+, a homer, 2 doubles and a walk. The results haven't been spectacular, but have been about as close to "average" as one can get after a slow start to the season. He's also been CRUSHING baseballs with an average EV of 97.5 and a 65.6% hard hit % in that same time-span. He JUST missed a homer last night, as well. Edit: His HH% and Average EV are highest on the team BTW. Yes, higher than Vladdy's. Edited April 28, 2021 by Deadpool

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 What about Jano? Well, he's the best defensive catcher in the AL... so that's... yeah... He needs to f***in' hit better.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Well, he's the best defensive catcher in the AL... so that's... yeah... He needs to f***in' hit better. Is this an actual fact? Not that his defence isn't good, but I find it hard to believe that he's the best in the AL?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Is this an actual fact? Not that his defence isn't good, but I find it hard to believe that he's the best in the AL? On a rate basis he pretty much is. You can't really claim it as fact because 1) defensive stats have error bars and 2) we don't know if his defense would regress (for better or worse) with more PT. Jansen's framing has rated as average but aside from that he's a top 5 defender in the AL by fangraphs and he's caught 20-40 innings fewer than all the guys above him.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Is this an actual fact? Not that his defence isn't good, but I find it hard to believe that he's the best in the AL? He was at the top of the list when last I checked, but I just checked now, and he's been passed by a couple of guys (he's #4 now). He's best by DRS still, but not by Fangraphs Def anymore.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Please stop, thanks. Like it or not the line up is due to change very soon with the return of Hernandez and Springer we know one thing for sure Grichuck isn't going nowhere he penciled in the outfield. Playing time for Tellez will be difficult to come by with Gurriel and possibly Biggio and Panik sharing 3rd base.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Gurriel's playing 3b? News to me! Other than Espinal, can anyone actually "play" it? Or do they just stand there and f*** it up?

When the entire pitching staff is having success, the guy behind the plate deserves a bit of credit. I just hope he can get that OBP closer to .300
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 The Toronto Blue Jays optioned Rowdy Tellez to the alternate training site yesterday as their line up will become more competitive with very limited playing time available. The Blue jays will have to decide what best for the organization as the first base position is no longer a viable option for Tellez anymore with Vlad Guerrero occupying the spot plus with the DH spot being used on rotational bases to give time to the various players when needed.

So Teo back friday our lineup is: Springer Bo Vlad Teo Biggio Grichuk Semien Lourdes Jansen Bench of Davis, Panik, Espinal Kirk. One of Davis or Espinal will get optioned Friday and they will go with a 9 man bullpen. When the starting pitching gets healthy, surely they can go with an 8 man bullpen and it would make more sense to have a lefty power bat in Tellez back on the bench.

That'a the trouble he's not doing anything at the plate this season other than Jansen he's the worst producing player on the team he's a one dimensional bench player not good for versatility for a manager.

EastCoaster Verified Member Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 (edited) Did you go to high school with Tellez and he picked on you? This is the thing you need to merit your spot in a line up sorry Tellez didn't earn his this season and the Blue jays seen it too that's why he's back in the minors. Other than DH he's blocked on this team as firstbase isn't his to have anymore. Now his options to the team are that much more limited. I played competitive ball and hockey growing up you had to earn your spot on the teams there's was no freebies. I remember once trying out for baseball with some returning players at the beginning of the tryouts the coach told everyone nobody's spot was guaranteed including returning players. One of the returnees got cut he went to the coaches to argue his case they all told him his fight was on the field during the tryouts not with them they told him he was simply out hustled by younger eager players who wanted on the team. EastCoaster Verified Member Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 Just don't get the facination with this guy so he's big and can hit with power big deal you actually have to hit the ball to win games which he hasn't been doing like Donalson said this ain't the the try leagues it's get er done leagues. Plus his path is blocked now with Vlad at first base so DH is his only spot the problem is there's plenty of better bats off the bench than his right now. Some were even predicting Grichuck would sit before Tellez absolutely no chance of that ever happening the Blue Jays aren't blind that's why he was the first guy sent down when Springer got activated they rather keep Panik and Espinal in the line up over him.

Keep preaching the gospel my man. Tellez sucks. This forum loves falling in love with average ass players like Tellez and Biggio. Head scratcher for sure

Tellez's bat was elite last year - he made drastic improvements to his BB% and K% and was statistically the 51st best hitter in baseball last year with underlying advanced stats that suggest he wasn't getting 'lucky'. That's why people want to see him get consistent playing time because even if he's primarily a DH, every lineup in baseball has room to add someone with a wRC+ over 130. You don't judge a player and banish him to the bench after 63 PA's - especially when there are several underlying stats suggesting he's hitting the ball very hard this year (which is a great predictor of success) and has been unlucky). Perhaps they see something in his swing this year that needs adjustment and time at the alternative site could be the place to fix that. However, I suspect we'll see Springer act as our primary DH over the next couple of weeks - but once he's able to return to CF full time, Tellez will be recalled to split time at DH. That timeline probably aligns well with the continue decline of Grichuk back to the 100-110 wRC+ hitter he is and he'll return to a platoon role with Tellez and/or can spell Gurriell in LF, who's been equally as bad offensively and defensively so far this year.

If the Blue jays were so sure on his bat why did they go get Semien another infielder instead of legit 3rd baseman they knew this would eventually cut into his playing time as a DH. Look what teams are doing today with their DH role mostly designated to a rotational role unless you've got a Nelson Cruz or David Ortiz type player who are premium DH hitters. The Blue Jays still valued Panik and Espinal over Tellez that should tell you something about how management is thinking the line up going into this season.

Injuries happen? Regardless, there are lots of at bats for Grichuk as a 4th OFer and Tellez at DH. You need to listen more around here. Please stop.
