but in Ross's defense, he did just sign Yates to a 1 year deal, so I don't fault him here. If Yates had returned to even half his 2019 performance (fWAR wise) this would have been a huge win for the Jays. I think ultimately the Jays rise or fall on the internal personnel anyways. Merryweather setting up Romano could be a pretty good combo (shades of Davis and Holland with the Royals in 2014?)

Yeah, Kirby Yates wasn't going to make or break the Jays' season. It sucks to lose the potential elite reliever but if Yates were to have a fantastic season he would have been a steal on his contract anyway. $5.5M in burned payroll also should not be a massive deal... should not.

Yeah, it wasn't a bad gamble. A healthy Yates could have made a difference of 2-3 wins.

I wonder if Rosenthal was ever an option. I mean, if the Jays knew Yates was a risky enough signing to reduce the offer from 8.5 to 5.5, why not just add a couple million and offer that to Rosenthal instead? Again, assuming he was an option and willing to sign with the Jays.

Ya, relying on a player who failed multiple physicals to be your closer in a season when you're expecting to make noise seems like a bad decision. These type of risks seem fine for meddling teams or teams that don't have payroll constraints. Wonder how we'll pivot from this news but I am curious how often this stuff happens and we don't hear about it.

I mean, very realistic chance that even with a healthy Yates all year, Romano ended up as the closer for the bulk of the season. Think of Yates less as "signed to be a closer" and more "signed to be a solid piece of a bullpen with a few solid pieces already."

Exactly. I think it also depends on what you classify as 'passing a physical'. If Tanaka took a physical, it would tell you the ligament in his elbow was slightly torn. Would the team say "well we already knew that" and classify the physical as 'passing'?

 

When they say someone 'failed' a physical, I've always assumed it's that they've concluded some pre-existing condition was simply worse than originally expected and they weren't comfortable with it.

 

It's like a home inspection - there's always something slightly wrong, it's just a matter of how many things are wrong and whether you can live with them or not. I have to imagine most athletes have pre-existing issues. A bad back (Paxton), a bum knee (Pedroia), an ankle that didn't heal the best (J.Polanco), a separated shoulder that pops out more than normal (Bellinger), Arthritis (Flores), etc.
