Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Just now weighing in but this is a travesty. We're the only MLB team without a dedicated radio team? Sounds like its pandemic related so surely it's just a 1 year thing. This is not a good look for the brand though. Baseball is such a good sport for radio too. 80% of the time I watch the games but it's nice to have the radio option for driving/working out/beers outside. ******** move, Sportsnet.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Really if they are going to simulcast they should do it the other way. Retire Buck, literally kill Tabler. Have Shulman and Wagner call a radio game and broadcast it over the video feed. Voila.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Some games also have an away feed on a higher channel Thats right. So basically you just gotta tune into the the away side channel everytime the Jays play. You'll get American commentators though, and you'll quickly find out just how biased they are
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Canada is a country full of cottages, campsites, and commutes. Even in 2020+ so many baseball fans have times when they want to follow a game but all they have access to is radio. Anyone who says this is just part of the changing media landscape is out of touch. For years I could pull up the MLB at bat app on my phone and listen to the ballgame radio feed while I was outside or on the treadmill. Rogers' cheap radio decision will ruin my smartphone app experience! This is just a horrible decision, plain and simple, and I hope they reverse course at least before 2022. Anybody who commutes, road trips, travels, runs, hikes, sits around a campfire drinking beer, does their chores.... even coding. I know coders, I code. If you code it is nice to listen to the radio broadcast and not have the visual distraction. Same could be said about 1 million other tasks. Writing. Writing angry diatribes with horrible grammar on BJMB, if you are watching the game you may make even more grammar mistakes, and the posts may be angrier. Vacuuming. Some ladies vacuum for the household, and can't always see the TV when vacuuming so want to listen. Same with washing dishes, or laundry or other lady chores. Roofing. Other types of men's work. Splitting wood. Stuck in traffic after a hard day at the trading desk down town, trading commodities, fighting the Robin-hooders. Lots of reasons for real men to need the radio too. Plan a long road trip across the U.S. or across Canada (can't do both because of the border restrictions due to the COVID-19) and you go from Manitoba to Saskatchewan (or Minnesota to South Dakota if stuck on other side), and excited to get to the Rockies... but time the drives to listen to the games... sometimes you drive from 11:00 to 6:00 and have a day game on the drive, sometimes between 5:00 and 11:00, to listen to the night game. Everybody is like why the f*** are we not leaving until late afternoon, you make up an excuse, because you are too embarrassed to admit you are timing the drive for the game. Terrible decision that effects everyone. Now instead of Blue Jays baseball they will listen to Limbaugh's (RIP) replacement coming in from right wing Buffalo radio, or CBC radio... either will polarize the society more.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 The Toronto Blue Jays Radio Network consists of 21 stations (17 AM, 4 FM) in 7 Canadian provinces. This move could see some losses in affiliate stations which would mean money lost, exposure lost etc., this is just a dumb move FULL STOP. Dont fix it if it aint broken. If the affiliate station does not leave, does Rogers truly believe these stations in the Radio Network should pay the same for a similcast production? What a mess.

Just fly him to the middle of a desert or forest than he can wander around forever smiling and babbling on about strong hands and real baseball players.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 I’ve pretty much had it with Buck even at colour. He just grumbles about the modern game all the time now. At least he doesn’t have as many chances to butcher names. Even names like Martinez! Exactly - I can't stand it. I still think we need a dedicated thread just to quote all the f***ing stupid things he says throughout a season. It would be overwhelming to keep up with though.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Hey, leave Buck alone. I make fun of him too but the man gets National TV exposure so he must be doing something right lol.

He speaks to the primary market, which is 40+ old white guys who love old school baseball and hate anyone who wants to change the game or show emotion. He's f***ing brutal.
Pinkfloid Verified Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Cost-cutting move for this season since there are no real home games in Canada?
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 Our current TV announcers are abysmal. 50% of the dialogue is them talking about what pitch the guy is likely throw. 25% is them talking about their careers no one remembers, and the other 25% is them auditioning for the Yankees by live-air jerking off to every Yankee they can think of. Still, if I listen to it on the radio, I'll generally turn into the US station. They need to hire someone good, like Elliott Price. That guy is amazing.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 Cost-cutting move for this season since there are no real home games in Canada? According to the MLB Network this was not a Blue Jays decision...100% on Sportsnet. I know it is all Rogers but the decision making arms are very different

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 Probably 80% of my Jays viewership came over the radio over the last 5 years as I'm up at my cottage a lot during the summer. And I expect that to be near 100% going forward since I quit TV service at my home. This is ********. But I have to say this is not just a cost cutting measure. I think this is a deliberate move to reduce the quality of free access to Blue Jays broadcasts. They want everyone subscribing to Rogers cable and Sportsnet. I'm quite sure that they absolutely won't tell Buck and Tabler to make their commentary more radio friendly.

I can hear him now talking about how the game was better when teams had TV and radio broadcasters and how all these numbers are ruining the game he once loved.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 (edited) My favorite Buck comment for no particular reason Watching Brett Lawrie furiously leg out an infield single on a chopper of a ground ball to the shortop Buck: "If I'd had speed like that I'd have hit. 220!"
