Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 He's gotten a lot better since 2018, when he accumulated most of that negative defensive value. He can run a bit and has a nice arm. I say keep him out there and use the DH to squeeze another bat into the lineup. Problem with Teo is that he's had many lazy moments where he doesn't run down balls. Dude has a great arm but he has to want to be a good fielder. Grichuk clearly has him beat in the field as of now so it would suck to substitute out his bat at the end of games.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Is it me or do the Jays-Astros-Brewers-Mariners-A’s cycle through a lot of the same fringe players? It's pretty common for teams to run through each other's garbage. Before landing in Tampa, Oliver Drake went through like 5 teams where he pitched one inning, was bad, and got DFA'd. For some guys they don't even get to be on the 40-man for more than half a day, teams like to claim guys on waivers and immediately DFA them in hopes the rest of the league won't notice or something lol.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 Doubtful. That means Tellez is on the bench and Tellez is projected to be a better hitter than Grichuk. Tellez is probably also a better fielding 1B than Vlad in 2021. Vlad DH, Tellez 1B, Teoscar RF, Grichuk bench vs Vlad 1B, Teoscar DH, Grichuk RF, Tellez bench Second option has better defense in RF but worse at 1B and worse offense. Against LHP option #2 might be better though. That's another way of saying the Jays have some decent options and a good bench. The team won't be gifting 600 PA to below replacement level players this year assuming normal health. That'll be a refreshing change.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 He was a frustrating player. Very good batted ball profile as well as sprint speed but weighed down by inexplicable defense. Also a really high K rate. The dream is dead.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 Randall Grichuk will be the regular RF to complement Springer who isn't a GG caliber centerfielder this make the Blue Jays much stronger defensively. Hernandez will be the 4th outfielder and probably spend majority of his time in the DH position. Grichuk has plate appearance incentives built in his contract for his last 3 years. Plus teams don't let their investments sit on a bench especially $30.9 mil ones if ever an opportunity present itself for a possible trade they'd like to have max value in return .

Grichuk's plate appearance incentives would be a good reason not to have him be a starter. Every player on the roster is an "investment", Grichuk just has almost no chance of returning a profit at this point while other players like Tellez still do.

The problem is the team is much weaker defensively with Hernandez in RF than Grich and the team is stronger offensively with Teoscar at the plate than Tellez. It's obvious that the chance of winning are greater with Randall in RF and Hernandez at DH. I see the regular line up being just that.

If you look at stat cast's outfielder jump Teoscar Lourdes and Grichuk were bunched in at 68.69,70 out of 105 last year. The year before Teoscar was 60 and Grichuk was 62. They are virtually the same. Teoscar has the stronger arm. Teoscar just makes dumb errors, letting a bouncing ball go under his glove. He's gotten better the last couple years and it's really about concentration. The difference between Grichuk and Teoscar really isn't that big. Grichuk and Tellez will split some time at DH, but everyone benefits with rest. Grichuk will get his at bats even if we have a remarkably healthy season from our position players.

If you look at fielding percentage plus Teoscar hadn't played that much RF because that his weakest position 2018 he played 33 games in RF with a .947 fielding % in 2019 played LF and CF only none in RF in 2020 played 38 game in RF with .958 fielding %. Grichuck in 2018 played 79 games in RF with .995 fielding percentage in 2019 he played 83 games in RF .994 fielding % only played CF in 2020. Bottom line is Teoscar makes stupid errors in the field that's what can cost you games you can't have a liability in games I wouldn't trust him in do or die situation because one of his dumb errors could cost you the season.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 It's Grichuk vs. Tellez at the plate. And at this point, we know what Grichuk is. Personally, I'd like to see if Tellez' 2020 is real.
