Hindsight is 20/20, they had no idea how the season would play out

FO is working on a long window of contention vs. a short one. It's proper.

A long window of contention you say? I just don't see that. Berrios deal (if they can't extend) and our division. The arb years coming and cost of signing our key pieces. Two elite players leave this year unless we spend a bundle. For so many reasons. I hope you are right Jim but I think we are long long way from coming close to attaining that goal. We got very lucky on a lot of things this season and had/have a shot to do some damage. The pen was and is a significant issue, albeit improved.

The problem is they have a great core of young position players (with more in the farm), but because they prioritized that, they're lacking pitching.

If they miss the post season do you management regrets their philosophy on holding back a bit in the off-season...the whole 'we don't want to add too much salary too fast' philosophy? A couple of extra impactful BP arms may have made all the difference.

Other than signing Liam Hendriks, I don't think there is anything else they could have done that wasn't going to fall into the lottery ticket category. Hell, they may have even caught a break by signing an injured Yates instead of Hand who they apparently wanted to sign. We can look at certain things in hindsight, like trading for Iglesias from the Reds, but bullpens are a bit more complicated from a building standpoint and more volatile year to year. I do think prioritizing relievers coming off down years rather than relievers who can't stay healthy is probably a better "buy low" scenario, and maybe one they will use more often moving forward.

Springer, Semien, and Ray is like the holy grail of off-seasons. Teams dream about having that level of success. I wouldn't be too hard on the front office for their BP missteps.

Pffftttt... I'd take Yates back next year on a team friendly deal again, he's been using our top of the line facilities in Dunedin, along with our high performance team. He'd be a get at a couple million.

That’s not even an outlandish conspiracy theory anymore. UFO coverup has also become fairly accepted. QAnon was the correct political equivalent.

Huh? When did it change from conspiracy theory? Every since the pandemic began, any time the lab theory came up, it was pretty well a consensus that it was a conspiracy theory. Not sure when that changed?

Anyway, my apologies for bringing that up if it's a topic that isn't allowed on the forum.

To be clear, there is no conspiracy. No evidence of that whatsoever. Anyone that thinks there is, is a dumb freedumb crackpot.

The fact of the matter is, the umpires have subconscious bias against that foreign team, the Blue Jays.

How hard do you think it will be to make a 90 win team a few years in a row with the talent on hand?

Injuries hit Groshans, Moreno, Pearson, Biggio, Kirk and Jansen... Better health from those guys could be big.

TINSTAAPP

Having said that, the Jays have done a good job filling the system with lower prospect tiered interesting arms. Good pitchers come out of "nowhere" all the time. Pitchers can be molded and pitches can be designed. A lot different kettle of fish than hitters.

Maybe they don't want to come up to Canada because it is a pain with the vax-pass and everything. Would rather go to Tampa in the playoffs where they can hit the strip clubs after without vax-pass.

NY might have vax-pass too... but no border crossing.

OK. I am misbehaving, but not really trying to start a conversation about vax-pass (that is not allowed), I think whether perceived rules in Canada piss of umps and make them bias is subtly different and could be allowed.

I just wanted to figure out Jim's acronym.

You got it. Highly rated pitching prospects go down in flames all the time. We might never see Forrest Whitley in MLB. Bieber was an unknown a few short years ago.

So no one should particularly care that the Jays have few "known" pitching prospects. Pitching prospect rankings and actual outcomes are poorly correlated.

Jays have one of the best young cores in the league. That alone should keep the team good for the next several years, and as long as Shatkins keeps the prospect pipeline primed and player development investments, it will continue. There will be other years where the Jays luck into a couple of FA that deliver a huge return and have a Manoah type come up mid season. In other words, I don't think 2021 is a one off.

Again, apologies for inadvertantly moving this thread into a controversial tangent.
