King Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) I'd be OK with either. Random draw could be a little bit more fun as the brackets would be unpredictable. Seeding would lead to a more accurate result. Edited August 26, 2021 by King
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Seeding in this case could bias the outcome. Random all the way.

King Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Seeding in this case could bias the outcome. Random all the way. How do you think it could be conducted? I was thinking a survey monkey for the field of 64 and 32 and then maybe poll threads for the round of 16 and beyond. Was thinking too many threads would clutter the board. My only worry about survey monkey is some nerd vote spamming and ruining the results.

If we could get everyone in the BJMB discord (I know it's mostly for trading discussions...) we could vote that way and it would be a 1 person 1 vote thing... But it would probably get less engagement on there...
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Super hypothetical here for the off-season, but if the Jays were able to land a stud like Correa in free agency, do you possibly look to flip Bo for a true ace? For example, how cheap is Cleveland? Any way they'd move Bieber? They are a bloody pitching factory anyways. If yes, do you have to add to Bo to get Bieber? How much do you add to get both Bieber and J.Ram? Not that I want a shake up of the young core, but replacing a 23 year old Bo with a 26 year old Correa and then using Bo to land an actual ace starting pitcher wouldn't be the worst thing in the world would it?

Overthinking it. Just sign a P. Correa is ugly anyway. But to answer the question I suppose Bieber for Bo is fair. I'd rather keep Bo though.

I'd rather keep Bo though. Fair enough, but I don't think there is a legit "ace" type SP on the market in free agency. Not a guy like Bieber anyways. But yeah, definitely over thinking it I guess. I'm just hoping the Jays go hard after Correa, but difficult to get a premier SS to sign long term with the Jays when Bo is already taking that spot.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Jays need to go 24-12 to get 90 wins For Boston to end up with 89 wins they need to go 17-17 (soon to be 16-17 as they are kicking the s*** out of the Twins) For Oakland to end up with 89 wins they need to go 19-16 For Seattle to end up with 89 wins they need to go 20-15

WryNGinger Verified Member Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Is there a concensus regarding what type of pitchers Walker is best able to tweak/guide there way to better results. Obviously it worked out really well with Ray. What other pitchers might he be able to fix next year?
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Not sure about starters but Andrew Miller will be a free agent and has had a rough year. He's 36 now, but was a beast for years. I wouldn't mind if the Jays tried to salvage him for a season. Just don't sign him and then bank on him being a key cog for the bullpen. If he comes in and regains his form it would just be a bonus.

Ray being good probably had more to do with 2020 just being a weird year and him playing for the one huge contract that can set him up for life. People are professionals and just say the right thing to make everyone look good. The fact we never hear anything bad about him is a great thing though. I just believe it's more on the players turning their careers around than it is on Walker who has some magic touch.

He was a complete disaster in 2020 before going the Jays, and under Walker's tutelage he was able to turn things around to the point where he pitched well in the playoffs. Ray is having a career best season with a remarkable improvement in his ability to throw strikes, surely the pitching coach who he made this turnaround under deserves a lot of credit. There are several factors which seem to have led to Ray's awful 2020 season. He attempted to change his mechanics to more of a short arm motion and that failed miserably. One other thing I noticed was that his spin rates spiked up in 2020 compared to other years. Could this be as a result of the new mechanics or was he utilizing some sort of grip enhancing substance that season?

This season - Ray's first full season with the Jays - his walk rate is down to a career-best 2.25 BB/9 and he's enjoying the best season of his career. Swinging strikes, ERA, FIP, xFIP, SIERA are all at career bests this season, and he's also going to have his best season by WAR. You're really not willing to give any credit to Walker for this?

Should we give the hitting coach credit for Semien or just chalk that up to 2020 being an outlier season? I understand your point and I'm sure Walker does do good work since you never hear a bad word about him. I'm just saying why don't we hear anything about him when our bullpen has been trash the entire year or when the likes of Anderson/Roark/Garcia s*** the bed. Other than Manoah/Romano, who is the last Jays pitcher that we truly developed from the bottom to the top during Shapiro's tenure? Just playing devil's advocate here.

I am willing to give him credit just as long as you're willing to discredit him for when pitchers underperform as well. I've always been a strong believer that players are responsible for their performance and coaching at the MLB is more of just guiding and ego managing mostly.

Sometimes the coaching staff does mess with a pitcher's approach and it has negative effects. Sometimes a pitcher goes to s*** on his own. Sometimes an pitcher improves on his own, sometimes it's because of the staff.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Season saved we picked up Jarrod Dyson It's great to actually have some real speed off the bench and I remember him being a good fielder. Not sure if that's the case anymore. Wondering what happens with the bench once Springer comes back. Having 6 OFers on the roster seems unlikely.

I think hes just insurance incase Springer gets hurt again or cant play cf when he comes back. The teams starting to realize grichuk sucks mega donkey balls so wants to get as many options for cf rest of the way.

Fangraphs has him ranked 21st for Defensive Runs Saved for all OFers. While having less innings played than a lot of the people ahead of him. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=of&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=10&type=1&season=2021&month=0&season1=2021&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2021-01-01&enddate=2021-12-31&sort=13,d
