Team just claimed Joel Payamps again and DFA'd Waguespack.

Very weird. Why did they DFA Payamps like two weeks ago and keep Waguespack then?

Nov. 25 — Sox claim Payamps from D-backs

Feb. 10 — Jays claim Payamps from Sox

Feb. 22 — Sox claim Payamps from Jays

Mar. 6 — Jays claim Payamps from Sox

I honestly think teams like to play chicken with the DFA game. "Go ahead, take our s***" and this just goes on until the player passes through waivers unclaimed or some dummy team ends up wasting the 40-man spot (or a 60-day IL stint happens) on the garbage that no one wants to keep around.

Wouldn't even be surprised if Payamps gets DFA'd again before the end of ST. A Porcello signing for example would once again make him the odd man out. It's clear the team likes him enough to put in a claim but not enough to waste the roster spot on him over other options.

They like him as an arm to abuse in a mop up role, perhaps.

Those are nice to have if you can repeatedly demote them to AAA between stints

I think they tried to slip him through waivers...he didn't clear, so now they are going to try and sneak Wags through.

Well there it is. They won the cat and mouse game and keep both of those s***** pitchers.

The Aquiline Ace is still a Blue Jay!

It's weird that I went from thinking "the rotation is an obvious weakness of the team" to "how are they going to fit all these guys who could be pretty decent into a 5 man rotation?" over the course of the last month.

Yeah, depth is set, lol.

AAA pitching staff of, Kay - Thornton - Hatch - Zeuch is pretty good depth, not to mention guys like Manoah and SWR etc, advancing behind them.

The BP is going to be a carousel, with all those good arms down there.

Meh, the rotation has depth but it's still obviously a weakness since it lacks quality. You have one elite pitcher in Ryu and then a million question marks. Robbie Ray projects well and will likely be much better than last season, but with his command variance that's still a decent number 2 at best, nothing compared to teams like the Dodgers, Padres, Mets, Yankees if healthy. Then after Ray is where you have a bunch of guys who may or may not suck.

On the whole, it's probably reasonably likely that one of Matz, Roark, Stripling, Pearson will be good, but unlikely all of them are. And because they're pitchers, even the good ones are going to miss time, which is where the depth comes into play. So then you're stuck with having a dozen #5 type quality starters following a great pitcher and a good one, and Ryu has injury concerns himself so if he misses a couple of weeks throughout the season then the rotation looks brutal.

Well, he did say this...

Most know are rotation is questionable. The offense should carry us well as the team stands, but a trade deadline deal should help out the Post-Season pitching.

Pearson = Fragile

Gonna make the early call and say he's gonna end up being Sanchez 2.0

He'll have 1 or 2 good seasons but ultimately never put anything together due to constant injuries.

I hope i'm wrong but this guy just feels like a glass cannon... and if he's already having nagging injuries this early in his career it's just gonna get worse

Some interesting tidbits about the Jays bullpen in this snipit. Didn't realize Dolis's slider was this dominant.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5) The Toronto Blue Jays have a top-five bullpen.

The lead arm for the ninth inning roles goes to the great Kirby Yates. Yates didn’t really pitch in 2020 due to injury but years prior he was known to be one of if not the best reliever in the league. Between 2018 and 2019 he held a 1.67 ERA and 1.93 FIP and grabbed 53 saves along the way. Word on the street is Yates has looked fantastic in spring training and is completely healthy.

The eight-inning pitcher in Toronto goes to Mr. Jordan Romano. Before the Yates signing Romano was a big target in drafts. In 2020 he made a pitch mix change by leaning on the slider and it lead to a 1.23 ERA and 36.8 K%. Romano is the perfect setup man who can step into the ninth inning role when needed.

In the seventh inning, you have Rafael Dolis. Last season Dolis finished with a 1.50 ERA and 31.0 K%. He features a slider that is essentially unhittable as it posted a -19 wRC+ and .000 ISO against. He also throws a splitter that induces just as many whiffs as the slider leaving him with two stellar breaking balls.

That is three pitchers who could technically all could close. All three have filthy breaking pitches and all three can create a lot of strikeouts. If the Blue Jays go to the seventh inning winning the game it will be very difficult to beat them with these three arms anchoring down the bullpen. Last season their bullpen was ranked 24th overall in terms of ERA and I suspect that a major turnaround is coming.
