Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 The league negotiations have given us a bit of clarity regarding the roster. 1. The season will start on time, so that may push ahead free agent timelines a bit. 2. There will be 26 man rosters, so we can plan for an 8 man bullpen again. 3. Most interestingly, there will be no DH in the NL. We know that Atkins has serious interest in a DH bat. Does he now circle back to Ozuna or Cruz and revisit whatever trade talks he had for Tellez/Grichuk/Gurriel/Hernandez at the time of the Brantley signing?

Wait, Atkins has a serious interest in a DH bat? What? They've signed Semien since then, we need a SP.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 I can see Vladdy, Tellez and Hernandez all getting a lot of AB's as DH this season with the roster as it stands. Plus Gurriel, Jansen, Kirk, Springer and Semien might get some AB's as DH as well. I don't see how Atkins could possibly be in the market for a DH bat right now.

I think Grichuk /Tellez/Vlad/Kirk can all get at bats in the DH spot this year. I don't see us signing a full time DH.
HypeLikeJoseCruzJr. Verified Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 Ya, we are swimming in bats, and especially DH-eligible bats. Only need now is SP and perhaps a nasty setup guy

Ya if we are able to pass players through a DH position, that is the best case scenario. Having a dedicated DH sucks unless the player is a game changer.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 Right Which Nelly Cruz is But we have bigger needs Ya thats where I was going because we don't have an endless budget. I think almost everyone wants a SP to go with Ryu. After that its debatable and for me it would be a 3rd Baseman or another reliever.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 Wait, Atkins has a serious interest in a DH bat? What? They've signed Semien since then, we need a SP. If you believe the Brantley rumours then they certainly do. His defensive profile differs little from Ozuna. I wasn't advocating that we sign a DH, but there appeared to be interest from our FO in doing so.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 If the roster stays as is, then how they use the DH spot will depend on how much they like Tellez because right now that's his only spot with Vlad at 1B. Against a LHP we will probably see Hernandez at DH and Grichuk in RF to get the better defensive lineup in there, but against righties I would imagine Tellez will get the bulk there unless they are not sold on his 2020 and will use him more situationally. Either way, I expect a lot of different lineups to be used in 2021.

It's an awesome luxury that we haven't had in a long time with players of this calibre (assuming 2020 Tellez was real). And to be real, there are always injuries so these guys will probably be playing full time for different parts of the season.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 Man, I hope they can get Rosenthal inked to a deal. Great career K and BB rates, and over 130 saves. It'd be nice to have 2-3 options to close games in case of injury, and if every one actually stays relatively healthy then you have a lights out high leverage bullpen. Plus then you shouldn't have to worry about Montoyo trotting your closer out there 3 games in a row or until the poor bastards arm falls off. Yates Rosenthal Romano Dolis Borucki Pretty solid group right there to anchor the BP.

If the man can stay healthy, he will be a HUGE part of the bullpen.

If the man can stay healthy, he will be a HUGE part of the bullpen. I agree. If they kept him in the pen and signed Rosenthal, there would be a s*** ton of opposition strike outs from the 6th inning on with that group of relievers. Only thing missing is a proven stud lefty, but hopefully Borucki can turn into that, and/or maybe even Mayza will come back strong from his TJS.

He should've been a defense lawyer or politician.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Right, but Semien has signed on since then, we need a decent SP, I'm pretty sure that's priority ATM. I'm not sure that signing Semien has anything to do with it, as they were going to address 3B either way. It seems obvious to me that they wanted to add a veteran bat at DH and trade someone else.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 The way the roster is built, seems lile the DH will be used as a rotating spot. Getting a DH only guy doesnt make sense.

The fact they are apparently enquiring on everyone makes clear they are keeping all options open.
