20 innings before he was shutdown with a forearm flexor strain after coming off an offseason with a major spinal surgery... lol. I mean he could bounce back. I wouldn't say I "fully expect" his velo to be back.

Matz only pitched 10 more innings last year and a forearm flexor strain ended his season. I never said Paxton's velocity would be back to his peak. I said it would be better than last year. He will be a much better pitcher than Matz next year. I could be wrong. I hope I am. I felt the same way about the big diesel last year and lots loved that deal.

Pitchers didn't have proper time to ramp up last year with the stop and start and short summer camp. Putting too much stock into Velo for 20 innings under the circumstances is ridiculous. Pitchers ramp up to spring training. They don't throw max velocity in January. I fully expect Paxton's velocity to be up from last year. 8.5 mil was a gamble worth taking. I would have rather taking a shot on Paxton who was truly elite once vs Chatwood and Matz who were never elite.

Our rotation is gross. There are 2 options left to improve that rotation in free agency. I'm starting to think the Jays won't sign anyone else.

THE SKY IS FALLING...

How do you know if the Jays didn't offer more, or that Paxton doesn't want to pitch in the East? So many variables as King pointed out.

Same guy who broke the signing said the Jays never officially offered a contract. They were just monitoring the situation so I guess they were hoping for a huge bargain.

Well, that explains even more, then. They do not trust him, not even @ 8M, I'll go with our FO over anyone here, lol.

That saying goes for basically every decision that's made. The whole point of a discussion board is to voice your own opinions. I called for the Yates signing weeks before we made it. When we made it I came here and championed management for making a great move. Who didn't love the Springer signing. I just don't love the Chatwood and Matz moves. I think all our money into paxton would have made more sense. 6 months from now we will know which would have been a better direction.

Yeah I don't think Saskjaysfan's take is unfounded. He has some valid points. I think there's no real point in arguing this as there is no real way for anyone to know until the season starts. Paxton could bounce back or he could suck, it's just guessing either way.

In context we're talking about Paxton, obviously the front office makes the decision, and I am discussing baseball on a baseball forum. I too called for Yates, Springer and Turner early on amongst others, turns out Semien seems a better move, and Toronto didn't have enough interest in Paxton.

So did any starting pitcher other than Bauer sign more than a 1 year deal this offseason?

I can think of a few relievers, but only Mike Minor for starters.

Well I'm still faintly holding out hope for a move for David Price. Who spends north of 250 mil on payroll following a Covid year!

Yeah until new light comes on it, I’ll agree with Gimpy here.

We’re not even just talking the Jays. With Boras at the helm, it’s a bit surprising all the major players apparently weren’t in on him at 1/8. It should’ve been a Kluber situation. He’s probably going to miss the first half of season or something

Deets on Turners deal...

Justin Turner alerted the baseball universe of his return to Los Angeles. Pending a physical, the Vayner Sports client will re-sign with the Dodgers for two years, $34MM with a $14MM team option for a third year. The deal includes an $8MM signing bonus and built-in escalators that could raise the overall value of the deal to $52MM over three years, conditional to MVP voting.

I wonder if Sanchez could get a 1 mil guarantee with incentives or if he would have to take a minor league invite. I wouldn't be adverse to a small gamble on Sanchez if he's hitting mid 90s.

I wanted us to sign him a few weeks ago but that was before I saw those shorts lol

Have to imagine he'll get an MLB deal somewhere if he's truly throwing that hard right now in February. Low salary of course.

Toronto just doesn't have a roster spot for him. They could make him the 8th reliever and option Borucki or Kay but that screws up the LHP/RHP balance. Better fit for a retooling team or a bad team that has a flexible bullpen situation.

Lmao is this real?

I read that yesterday and spent way too long trying to figure out what "does not believe in bidding wars" is even supposed to mean. I mean you got outbid by the f***ing Rays, Steve. Does it mean that you only want to sign players if nobody else wants them?

I believe he's on record as wanting to sign as a starter. If the guy can figure out the blister issues maybe he can resurrect his career, but I wouldn't take that bet.

How long has Sandy Alderson been there? He has quite the amount of haters on twitter.

The major shoulder surgery, past chronic blister issues, and poor performance as a SP make me doubt that any team will have much faith in him as a traditional SP.

Career 1.67 ERA / 2.93 FIP in relief

Career 4.24 ERA / 4.56 FIP as a starter (5.29 / 5.12 after 2016)

As a SP, first time through the order: 2.39 ERA / 3.70 FIP

I understand why most pitchers want to start as long as possible. Being a starter really increases likely compensation. But Sanchez is such a glaring candidate to possibly excel in the pen... if the guy pivoted now he might still have like seven more big league seasons.

I’d imagine it means they internally set their own offer and stick to that, rather than get swayed by agent smoke or into paying more than they’re comfortable with.

Not saying which approach is best but that’s how I read it

It amazes me how much discussion Sanchez has generated up to and including this point in his pitching career. You know, for somebody who sucked at pitching outside of one season in 2016. He’s mostly been a bad pitcher and is very likely still a bad pitcher.

Bad pitchers with fantastic tools are pretty interesting / tantalizing

It's a really small sample size as a reliever though and was exclusively back before the blister and shoulder issues hit. It's entirely possible that Sanchez sucks both as a starter and a reliever.

This may be likely, but the likelihood of him being an opener or multi inning relief after 5 is seemingly paramount, who knows.

Are you doing one of those “words of the day” things?

Look again and observe his first time through the order stats.

Relieving would help him avoid injuries going forward
