Scion Verified Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 Jesus - and here I am, being told (by a vegan) that vegans are the best and the healthiest people on earth (and that the rest of us non-vegans are all scum) Everyone is different, a one size fits all method is rarely the answer. There are people who swear by vegan diets and those that swear by all meat diets. I think the best approach is to just do what works for you.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 Wow, he finished that entire inning with a boxer break? Damn, poor guy was probably wishing it was a nightmare, the boxer break is when the front of your knuckle breaks and gets shoved back in your hand, basically. Yeah im sure he didn't want to come out of the game since he just got back from a month-long DL stint... Springer probably did the same thing in his last game against the Braves. I bet he injured his leg earlier in the game but tried to stay in and only made it worse later.
metafour Verified Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 Yeah he plays incredibly hard and has explosive athleticism, but his frame is not exactly robust. 6'2" 190 compared to, say, a tank like Mike Trout at 6'2" 235 What would being "more robust" have to do with anything? Baseball is a non-contact sport. There are 6'2 190 pound WR's in the NFL who get lit up. Some guys are just more injury prone and Buxton obviously falls in that category.

He hurt it the day before when he grabbed his quad, we all saw it but our org. lol

If he is truly more injury prone then there is a reason for it. It's not a physical trait that just exists in the abstract.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 I'm convinced there's some measure of innate coordination that goes into avoiding injury and some people have it and some people don't. Like an instinct on how to brace before the wall or how to land or how to slide, etc. Baseball Martial Arts...

It was a joke about how vegans always go out of the way to tell you they are vegan. Same with people who do crossfit. I'll show myself out.

Half the league's scorers drop to the ground on every drive and every shot. But the thing that always gets me is that these are giant men and they're falling to a hard surface all the time and they look completely weightless doing it. Like I know if my fat ass did that, I'd be crying about my hip for two weeks. And I feel like you see way less injuries in basketball than baseball despite the NBA being an incredibly high octane contact sport.

Not sure there are more or less injuries in either sport though. You'd have to run an analysis. The thing with basketball is that so much of the sport is rhythm - the players don't know what is going to happen exactly but their internal clocks can kind of time the flow of the game/plays. On the contrary a lot of baseball is purely reactionary.
metafour Verified Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 If he is truly more injury prone then there is a reason for it. It's not a physical trait that just exists in the abstract. It could be all sorts of things. Some people's bodies just aren't as resilient, whether its weaker bone density, smaller/weaker joints, ligaments, etc. You'll see some athletes who are extremely susceptible to minor things like muscle strains, whereas others aren't. Buxton might just be a guy who is extremely explosive/athletic but in a body that is a bit fragile. I don't think that his weight has anything to do with it, and really, Mike Trout's more robust frame just means that he's putting even MORE stress on his joints and tendons and ligaments any time he exerts himself.
King Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 The NBA was a shitshow this year injury wise. I don't know how you can say that there are significantly less injuries. Just look at the teams in the playoffs. The Nuggets lost Jamal Murray. Clippers lost Kawhi and Ibaka. Nets lost Kyrie and were playing Harden with a grade 2 hamstring strain. Embiid was playing with a torn meniscus. Donovan Mitchell was playing injured on the Jazz, they were also missing Mike Conley. It's a f***ing trainwreck. Basically every team is playing hobbled. Might as well be wheelchair basketball. Also Anthony Davis on the lakers.

Fragile is the opposite of robust. You just said the same thing as me. I dunno, I'm not a doctor. Mike Trout's bigger muscles could provide structural support to his body, though. Of course it is all very complicated but when you watch Byron Buxton with his gazelle frame and gracile bone structure "glide" around the field you don't really think of someone who will be able to avoid breaking bones all the time while playing sports.

At least when I make a bad post like the sabr one the other day I just own it and move on. What are you even arguing? You’re tossing out Trout like guys like Stanton and Judge don’t exist

You'd never expect abnormally tall/big people to hold up. Terrible point here, Connor.

If I look at a population and notice that a subset of the population is more likely to be/do something (say I notice short+bald people are more likely to order a wife from Russia), if I then look WITHIN that subset of the population that specific dependent variable will likely just look normally distributed within the subset. Plenty of short+bald people don't order their wives from Russia.

A lot of people even within the league are attributing the rash of injuries to the incredibly short offseason and awkward scheduling of the past year-plus. Guys haven't rested properly in a long time (which is why I think it's absolute lunacy how many are already gearing up for the Olympics). But you're right, I don't have any numbers on which league suffers more injuries overall and my assumption that baseball has more than the NBA could just be built on confirmation bias.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 Any idea what this could be about? Field of Dreams game perhaps?

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 Sports injuries mostly bad luck and a player's risk threshold. Some guys will take significant risks to make a play, others will not attempt. Sundin was a NHL ironman for a reason. No chicken Swede jokes please, this is a respectable discussion board. Buxton has had bad luck, and also plays the game with a somewhat reckless abandon, hence the injuries. Maybe also has lower bone density and/or a tighter wound connective tissue (ligaments, tendons, cartilage), but even if this is true, it would be a lesser contributor then the luck and reckless contribution.
