At this point, we need to sign Bauer, or trade for Hendricks.

Signing oft-injured Paxton & Walker just wouldn't do enough on the WIN curve imo. Internal options likely aren't too far off from them.

Bauer or Hendricks along with one of above is the best choice.

This would suck... thats one less option we have and makes the price of others go a tad bit higher.

Pretty much left with made-of-glass Paxton and Odorizzi for mid-rotation in terms of FA. Walker one of the better backend guys I guess. Couple other half-interesting options there maybe

Edit- I guess I’m assuming Bauer not an option of course

Ya I don't see Bauer as an option. I think we're gonna end up with Walker but would love the Bryant/Hendricks combo.

They're signing Bauer, I believe in shatkins.

I do too. We've heard nothing for Angels land, and Mets/Dodgers are both very close to the Tax with extensions looming for their core.

As mentioned in this thread, Giants don't offer much in terms of winning, and we can match/beat any contract they offer him, pending it's not ridiculous.

Stars seem to align very logically with us getting him.

I can't help but think there's a very good chance of this happening. This offseason seems to mirror that of last year in a lot of ways. Last year the front office made a take it or leave it offer to Odorizzi, walked away from the Wheeler negotiations when offers surpassed 9 figures, and went all in for Ryu. If reports are to be believed they also made a $300 million offer to Cole as well before he ended up signing with the Yankees. This year the front office has made take it or leave it offers to Gausman and Sugano, and went all in to reel in Springer. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Bauer is another top target such as Ryu and Springer that they will push very hard to bring on board.

Great way of looking at it! Good points too. He makes sense to be a high target for him. Sounds like they were really trying to sell him on the performance complex and culture earlier in the OS, and we still have so much payroll flexibility from what we've been hearing, and where they're current at.

Only 18 days until pitchers and catchers report, so I imagine he's going to want to sign fairly soon. The sooner he signs the sooner he could start working at the complex and make use of the pitching lab and other things that would truly resonate with someone like Bauer.

One way or another, I'm thinking he signs within a week.

Luba is relentless. Poor Heyman :(

She's great! Fact checks everything for her clients. Super entertaining for one, and easier to weed through the BS.

Ughhh...

Players get tired of waiting. MLB trade rumors top 50 also had 15 honourable mentions. 37 of those 65 players are still free agents. Behind that there's at least 50+ guys like Travis Shaw and the likes looking for jobs. Spring training is less than 21 days away for the earliest report date.

I don't think that is the deal with Tanaka. The rumblings earlier in the offseason were that he wanted to return to New York or he would think long and hard about going home. Now that the Yanks have brought in other SP they have probably told him they are out, so he is going home.

Maybe signing Shoe for another season. Management did choose him over Walker in the most important game of the season last year.

I do think Shoemaker has something to offer but he would be wayyyyy down my preference list right now. A s***** team like the Orioles should absolutely sign him though.

This is a strange excerpt from the same article:

It’s unknown whether Bauer has any other formal offers, but it’s unlikely any team has made a higher bid, establishing the Mets as the clear favorites to land baseball’s top free-agent pitcher.

Got it. All we know is that one team has a formal offer made to Bauer, so obviously that makes them the clear favorite to sign him. f*** me this guesswork is getting out of hand this offseason in particular.

The list of unsigned free agents is remarkably long

3 weeks until catchers and pitchers report

It would probably be a pretty inconsequential signing. What’s he get, $4m? I hope they bring him back as depth. If he’s healthy, I don’t mind him being the #5 guy

Yeah no doubt the glacial pace of the offseason is largely to blame, but there's been a competition to the the first to throw out speculative "reporting" with no attempt to independently verify the veracity of any of the information.

Is he even worth the roster spot on a team that intends to compete? I don't like the idea of the Jays giving a spot to a guy who's averaged 30 innings per season the last three years, they need to get better production out of their rotation this season.

I would take Shoe as the 5th starter all day but we're forced to use one of Roark/Stripling since we already have $$ invested there. So I don't see him coming back unless we strike out on every better pitcher.

1/2 Ryu and ??

3 Pearson

4 Ray

5 Roark or Stripling

If Tanaka is out and Bauer is not likely, then it’s down to Odorizzi and/or Paxton. My guess is the Jays would go with Odorizzi if given the choice (less of an injury risk + they were in on him last winter) but both have downsides.

Given what FA pitching is left and the weak crop in 2022 outside of the older SP, it makes sense that a trade is inevitable.

You can't give out the Springer contract then half ass the rest

The Angels have repeatedly signed bats without bolstering pitching, but Atkins surely won't make that mistake, right?

Not really. They are just the most talked about.

Bauer

Tanaka

Paxton

Porcello

Archer

Odorizzi

Shoemaker

Wainwright

Brett Anderson

Walker

Rodon

Hill

Leake

Arrieta

Homer Bailey

Hamels

Matt Moore (good numbers in Japan in 2020!)

Trevor Cahill

Tyler Anderson

McHugh

Fiers

Anibal Sanchez

Aaron Sanchez

Nobody wants to see Toronto dumpster dive but the bottom of this list has some guys who should help a team and somebody will strike gold on one of those shittier names. Look how good Drew Smyly was last year.
